Flash vs. Superman races

For those who listen to Back Issue Spotlight, you may have heard that I recently picked up the 1st 2 Flash/Superman races as back issues.

The first was in Superman #199 (written by Jim Shooter!) and the second in Flash #175. I just read Superman #199 and I have vivid memories of this story, I must have read it a number of times as a kid, but probably as a reprint somewhere since the actual comic came out when I was 5 (Aug 1967) years before I was reading comics.

Anyway, I found a great web-site with details & summaries on the various Superman/Flash races:

cool! The Worlds Finest 198/199 race was the first one I recall buying on the stands. I LOVED it. And it always seemed right to me that Flash should win as the fasted of them all. (just like, when you got down to it, The Hulk was always the strongest superhero -- at least in the Marvel Universe).

I always thought that Flash should always win those races, if the race were fair. The Flash is the "Fastest Man Alive" not the second fastest man. I know the argument is that Superman is a Kryptonian so he does not count as a man that he is a "superman". I do not see what the problem with Superman not being the best at everything he does. To me Superman has all these great powers that he could any or all of them to defeat a bad guy. So if he was chasing a evil speedster that ran faster than him, Superman would use another one of his powers like flying to catch him.
