DC Starts to unveil Nov. Solicits

Post by BobBretall »

Here are some JSA books:
http://www.newsarama.com/comics/080815-kingdom-jsa.html

Three $3.99 Kingdom Come "Specials" and the penultimate (that means "2nd to last", folks) chapter of the Gog storyline in JSA.
And (of course) 1-in-10 variant covers on ALL of them!!!

I think these will probably be good stories, but can't we just get the story in the pages of JSA without DC coming back to pick our pockets for more Special issues, especially with the thrice-cursed variant covers. Who keeps buying these (variant covers) to encourage the publishers to keep churning them out?

There are also some previews of some other DCU "biggies" here:
http://www.newsarama.com/comics/080818- ... tions.html
(The Full DC solicits will be up on this URL at 5pm easter on Mon Aug 18th)

Just what we need. MORE limited series & "Special" one-shots.

Kevin Smith seems to be doing a Batman mini-series to get some work for his buddy Walt Flanagan. I think I can safely skip that one.

What does anyone else think?

I'm all over Jimmy and Amanda's Terra series. Been reading it about it for so long, I'm excited to finally be able to read it.

I love Kevin Smith so I will be supporting it, plus I love Onomatopoeia. Even if it is late :D . They annonouced that one at Comic Con and I wished I was there because he came into the panel. Of course when I go to San Diego I love going to the DC panels and so does my wife suprisingly. I know they release the news on newsarama but being there captures the energy. I love them. I am ok with the specials as long as they are good. Look at Secret Invasion this week alone. Not complaining a bit though because most of what I read is much better then the main title. Just finished the Black Panther tie-in and that was the best Secret Invasion title to date IMHO. If the quality is there like with the Final Criisis One shots I am perfectly ok and happy.

As far as the variants, I buy them but I don't see why people complain, just don't buy them if you don't want them. I usually only get variants for the Justice Society and Justice League (when they were doing them). I don't for other titles unless they particularly interest me.

Also this month we have the antipated Terra mini from Palmiotti and Gray (love these guys). I see they have some Superman work coming as well.

I totally agree that DC (and Marvel) is putting out way too many mini-series. That was part of thoughts about the 8-issue mini-format not necessary being a good one, if they continue to put out tons of minis. an 8 issue series a huge commitment.

I don't mind the JSA one-shots, in fact, I am very excited to read them. However, together along with all the DC events and mini it does. However, if you are going to publish a weekly event, this is what you do and not the other weekly one-shots that DC had done in the past.

Do we need a Terra mini-series at the same time that they are giving us a Terror Titans mini-series. Is the Titans such a big hit now? I want to get the Terra mini, but DC needs to schedule their mini-series better.

A Superman/ Supergirl 5 part mini? During the current Superman crossover? What is DC thinking? With this and the Batman/ Superman Vampire mini-series that was solicited last month, I think DC is just publishing their inventory stories.

I also think that they should have published Trinity AFTER Final Crisis is over. With the main book and spin-offs, DC is essentially publishing two weekly mini-series. While Trinity is good, it isn't a must-read. Especially with all the big things happening in Superman, Batman, and Final Crisis books. Every time I read Trinity, I get the same feeling when I read Superman/ Batman, the stories are not part of the current continuity.

As for the Kevin Smith book, I am a big fan so I probably get it. But again, how many Batman mini-series do we need? Did you noticed that Batman 682 is one of two issues of Batman publish in November?

Sorry if I sound negative. I am excited for the November books, but there are somethings I just don't understand.

I also love Kevin Smith ....but...

* He has not been too good at getting comics done & out in a timely fashion in the past (though allegedly this one has all been written)

* Out-of-continuity Batman mini-series inevitably end up in dollar bins within a year or so.

So, my plan here is to skip this as it comes out and probably pick it up "on the cheap" in the future. I feel the same way about the Superman/Supergirl mini & the Superman/Batman/Vampires mini.

I'll be getting the Terra mini for the Amanda Connor art & I'll get the Kingdom Come one-shots as well.

I'm not as bothered by the 1-in-10 variants, I can safely ignore those. The ones that bug me (buying from DCBS) are the 50/50 variants where there are not separate order codes for the different covers (DC/Marvel never do the separate order codes).

When this happens, I have to take a crap shoot on which cover I get, or else be really playing close attention and remember to send an e-mail when the books are being shipped to ask for a particular cover. Believe me, on books like Final crisis where there is one really ugly cover & one really beautiful cover.

I have to agree with this, and most of the time I don't even really care which cover I'd get but I would like to at least have consistency across a series. For example, I've been getting a number of the Battlestar Galactica series from Dynamite, and not only do they have at least a 50/50 cover split (sometimes up to 5 or 6 different covers that are not separately orderable) but one is generally a photo rather than artwork. I don't mind photo covers, but having the issues of a series flip back and forth from having a photo cover to having an artwork cover is annoying. If I thought any of the companies cared about the LCS, I might actually wonder if this wasn't a little bit of an attempt to help drive people to the brick & mortar stores over the online services. But I'm sure that isn't actually part of the consideration.

By the way, Bob, assuming you consider the Chip Kidd designs the "ugly" covers (as that appears to be the more common opinion) and you got that version for FC #1, I'd be willing to trade you a Green Lantern cover to #1 for the Chip Kidd strip design #1. Again, I'm more about consistency, and I've got the strip design on #2 & #3, so that's what I'm going to be requesting for the remainder of the series (assuming I remember/realize when the issues come out and send an email). Which I figure should make some people happy, as I'm guessing more people are requesting the "iconic" character covers, and of course if everyone requests one version, half the people are going to be out of luck.

Mostly the LCS's are going to be out of luck (based on what I am observing in shops). What am I observing? 10-20 copies of the "strip down the middle" cover warming the rack, and none (or maybe 1-2 of the "iconic"). So consumers are voting with their wallets and leaving one of those covers on the shelf in droves.

On the on-line front, most people are not going to send an e-mail to DCBS to request a specific cover, so I suspect they will be just fine, sending out the "strip" covers to those who don't send a request ;)

On a related topic, I think it is really bad for DC to do a 50/50 cover with a mix where there is going to be such a clear preference by the readers. If the covers are by Perez & Jim Lee, there will be a more equal split on preference, but such is not the case with Final Crisis.

Good point. I've haven't been to an LCS in quite a while, as one way of controlling my spending is to simply not put myself in a position to make that casual purchase I don't need. If stores are ending up stuck with the one cover rather than the late coming customers simply picking up the cover that is left, that is a problem. Of course, I'm not completely certain if the problem is entirely with the cover, or is it also a case of the store over anticipating the demand for FC. Combine a lower demand for the title with a 50/50 cover split, and obviously the one cover still on shelves is the least popular, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the issue didn't sell because of the cover. Perhaps the iconic covers would do a better job of attracting a reader who didn't come into the store with the intent of purchasing FC, but that's a difficult hypothesis to actually prove given how many other variables are also in play here.

In any case, I've sent you a message via Facebook to work out the trade.

One of the good things about the JSA tie-ins is the Final Crisis mini-series tie-ins came to an end for the most part the previous month. Otherwise I might have to acutally look at cutting some books.
