Hey John and Bob,
First off, let me say how much I enjoy all the podcasts you guys take the time to do. (And yes, I am aware that is very poor sentence structure, ending with "do" ).

With that said, when are we going to get another Back-Issue Spotlight. Love those things.

Also, Bob, you were mentioning the Conan book you are pre-ordering and I heard you say Belit, as in Ba'let and it got me wondering ... Is that the correct pronunciation? I have always said Belit as sounding like "Beret or Delay" and would really like to know if I was wrong all these years. That is a great possibility because I use to pronounce Magneto as Magnet'O and not Mag'Neat'O.

I think you also say Tigra as Tee'gra instead of my Tie'gra, was wondering about that also. But again I use to call Sub-Mariner like the vessel with an "er" on the end ... submarine er. hahaha

Anyway, the main reason for this now gone off the rail posting (shouldn't post before coffee), is to say thanks to you both. Peace.

Don't sweat the sentence structure. I certainly don't. Sometimes the ungammatical sentence structure is the clearest way to get an idea out.

Bob and I discussed that this morning. We want to do more but one of the hold ups is a lack of time on my part. If people want to participate in the podcast and help us to some more Back Issue Spotlights, we are always open to that.

Personally, I go with Mag'Neat'O just because it sounds neat-o. That having been said, if I lived in the Marvel Universe, I'd probably pronounce however Magneto preferred. He doesn't seem like a guy worth crossing.

I always go with Tie'gra. I'm not saying it is right, just that it is was I go with.

I pronounce it Mag'neat'O because that's how I've heard Stan Lee pronounce it. I think I even vaguely recall him being asked for the correct pronunciation for it at some point.

Similar to Fabian Nicieza pronouncing his own name as Nay-See-ay-za (there's the hint of a 't' between the nay and the see, making the 'see' sound 'hard').

And Greg Pak pronouncing his last name as "Pokk".

One last creator I've heard is Rob Liefeld - "Lie-feld", as it's spelled. Not "Lee-feld".

This one is tricky, since John has at this point 60+ more new comics to keep up with every month than I do.
I have, in the past, brought in guests to do BI Spotlights with on various books/characters. I'm happy to continue with that if people e-mail or PM me with ideas of stuff that I'm interested in reading/re-reading.
Keep in mind that we generally like to feature stuff that is reasonably available in TPB collections so listeners can pick the stories up if they get interested by the episode.

Belit is tricky. As far as I know, REH did not use the circumflex over the e, but Farnsworth Wright added it in Weird Tales. "Be'lit" is an ancient Akkadian term (means "lady" or "mistress"), and my guess is that Bob got it from Zenaide Ragozin's Chaldea, which was in his library. Ragozin did not use the circumflex e', either. However, the pronunciation would still be the same: the circumflex is an accent neither acute nor grave, but rising and falling -- think of the "e'" in "fe'te", for instance. The "i" will be pronounced "ee".

For some reason I've always said "Tee-gra" in my head when reading her stories, all the way back to GS Creatures #1 in 1974, but "Tie-gra" makes sense, because of Tigers, never really thought of that. It's going to be a hard habit to break my pronunciation habit on this one.
But, then again, Mag-Neat-o isn't pronounced like magnet, and Sub-Mariner isn't pronounced like submarine.

Even though when it comes to Tigra, I have always, like Jon, said Tie'gra ... when I heard your pronunciation I liked it right away. It sounds more ... "comic book spectacular"


Still hate the sound of Mag'neat'o and has taken me years to get use to it. Submariner on the other hand ... have to say I enjoy the "non US military branch" sounding one. So glad when I heard Stan Lee say it on some show many years ago.

I don't have any ideas yet for how to change to show now that you are not always reading the same titles. I do know that the thing I like the most about the show is the intelligent, informed (sometimes differing) opinion, especially, the interaction between you guys.

I first started listening to the show a few years ago because I was listening to another podcast and heard your promo emphasizing how long you've both been reading comics and the mind-boggling number of current titles you read.

I'm also a huge fan of the Back Issue Spotlights. I've been reading comics about as long as Bob has, but don't read many new titles, mostly because most mainstream comics art does not appeal to me, and the price of single issues is too high for the amount of story you get. I'm more likely to to pick up a trade. I do read regularly magazine about comics (everything TwoMorrows puts out).

As soon as I read this, I realized (despite my initial hesitation about a format change in which you both might not be reading all the titles reviewed in a given week) that of course it's possible to have an intelligent conversation about a comic even if only one person has read the book. As I thought about it, I remembered that my friends and I talk all the time about comics, books, movies which only one of us has seen.

I listened to the show and enjoyed it a great deal. I thought it was one of the most memorable & strongest shows in a while. I especially liked the discussion of the Moonstone book & thought it was very useful & constructive with extremely insightful analysis from an editorial mindset about what would make the story stronger (starting with a different page than the one they chose), the lack of impact of a double-page spread (suggestions for what would've been better), and details which would improve the overall packaging/presentation (editorial, production and design improvements which would make it stand out more effectively alongside the volume of comics that come out every week).

I hope Moonstone listens & incorporates your suggestions in future installments and maybe even fixes that first issue when it gets collected.

Absolutely. That was a nice way to incorporate the verbal union of the two of you, while still keeping it only a one person read.

I really think that if we could just get one (sometimes two) books a week from both of you (defining the differences, if any, of the books being reviewed), the rest is just icing on the proverbial cake.

I don't think any listener here will mind you guys going to a more ... sparse double review as long as we can get one or two a week and then a great discussion on the other solo reviewed book or books.

I personally would love to see a 4th book come in more often anyway. Do a DC/Marvel/Other/Other type of show, with any one or two of those being reviewed by both and then the other two or three being a solo opinion with a discussion between you both.

While I don;t have images posted, I'm sure you can find a pile of these books on the rack at any LCS. You can visit your local shop & thumb through a copy.

Have not listed to this weeks but as far as last weeks Comic Spotlight, it looks like Arden is shipping the Atlas United book this week, January 4, 2012:

I don't know how legit it is, but there you go if you are dying for it. I read a copy from NYCC. I would rate it a solid 3. A decent book but as I have no history with Atlas, no reason to go out of my way to track it down. I can get my fix of that type of book from publishers that are already established. Still give it a shot if it sounds good to you. More publishers can only help. Happy Hunting and looking forward to the new episode. Thanks.
