My LCS is attempting to save customers and battle online

Post by TravAzz »

I've been going to my LCS for nearly 10 years now. It's Bookery Fantasy, http://www.bookeryfantasy.com/, one of the largest comic and gaming stores in the country. (Per square foot)

I've had a pull list through here since day one. It started out if you had 40 monthly titles pulled you received a 20% discount on your books. With the price of comics going up, they did drop it to 30 monthly titles. Along with this discount, you receive a 20% discount on back issues. This has been great for me and has kept me very loyal to them.

Bookery, like most comic shops, has taken a little hit in business the past few years because of various reasons; economy, gas prices, online pricing, etc. So they have, IMHO, taken a step to try to bring in business again. They are selling all new-release comics, graphic novels, books, magazines, action-figures and statues for 15% off. All 20% customers were grandfathered into, and get to keep their 20%.

I know 15% is no where near the savings of DCBS or MailOrderComics, but I think it's a noble step on their behalf to bring customers back into the store.

What do you guys think?

I think that's very good, especially if they are a good, friendly store that gives good service.

I spend $50-100 at an LCS even now that gives 10% off stuff plucked from the racks, plus an extra ~5% bonus of "comic cash" that can be used at the store (basically 50 cents for every $5 increment).

My old LCS used to give me 25% and I stayed there even in light of DCBS until the owner packed up and moved cross country. 20% is a pretty good deal (for grandfathered customers) and worth supporting a shop that makes the effort.
