Next Spider-Man writer

Post by WalshieUK »

With Dan Slott soon to leave Amazing Spider-Man after nearly 200 issues I wondered who you would all like to take over as writer.

My personal choice would be Donny Cates.

Unfortunately I think he would need to drop a title to make space as he already writes Redneck, Babyteeth, Thanos and Doctor Strange ongoings, but he’s a real talent.

His work on characters like the Cosmic Ghost Rider and the cast of Babyteeth shows he could handle the lighter tone of Spidey, and the character work and relationship building he displayed in God Country, Redneck and Babyteeth shows he could thrive with the supporting cast that underpins any good Spidey run.

I’d love to hear your various choices!

Currently at Marvel - Jason Aaron if he is only doing thor, kelly thompson, maybe Mark Waid, max bemis, nick spencer, i could go Cates but only if Thanos is canceled, hes spread too thin

Not at Marvel - BKV

Hey Drew

Jason Aaron would be interesting. He’s a great writer but I can’t think of anything he’s written with a similar tone to Spider-Man. Would be cool to see though.

Mark Waid would be a bit too safe I think and his Avengers work has been a bit lacklustre in my view.

I’d say Max Bemis and Kelly Thompson are a bit inexperienced and too low profile for arguably Marvel’s premier title.

I like Nick Spencer and he’s proven he can do light hearted with Superior Foes and Ant-Man, but I think his current critical standing following Secret Empire would make him an unpopular choice with the masses.

Oh thats a good question, do they want someone inhouse, an established big name (aaron), someone newer(cates, ewing, tom taylor), is it time for a woman to write (willowwilson)?

They need someone that excites a bit and have had decent sales

i dont think kelly thompson is in the running, havent had much luck on hawkeye or captmarvel.

most of the ones wouldnt be too surprising (aaron, taylor, cates) have a lot of stuff out but that can ofc change

g willow wilson could be an intersting choice, massive PR

spencer is the safest bet, with several high profile work and seems to be free now? but would he want another high profile thing after getting burned on secret empire and captain america

most fun if they pull a rabbit out of the hat and sign hickman for AMS

I wouldn't want Spencer, as his Cap run was... uneven to put it nicely. And while he's a talented writer, he can't seem to separate his comic writing from his highly-political twitter obsession. I would make the same argument about GW Wilson.

No matter which side of the political spectrum a writer leans to, I don't want that injected into my comics. The real world is so full of toxic politics, I REALLY do not want to be brow-beaten with it in my escapist fiction. The minute a comic turns political, I tune out quickly. Even with a book like X-Men, arguably my favorite franchise, I don't like it when they go too far down the "oppressed minority" rabbit hole. While the X-Men have always been a metaphor for *insert group here*, going to that well too often is a cheap writing crutch, IMO.

I would prefer a writer like Zeb Wells return full-time, or even bump Chip Zdarski up to the big chair, as his Spectacular title has been substantially better than Amazing. He certainly gets the character. I'm stunned how good Spectacular is. I had no plan to buy or read a secondary Spidey title, but after sampling the first issue, I had to keep going.

For a less "safe" choice, how about Remender? Much like Aaron, he hasn't really done much in the traditional Spider-Man "tone", but he's so talented I know it would be a compelling read.

you should stick to mainstream DC - they keep it pretty middle of the road if thats what you want in your comics

I get the reservation on Spencer, mostly because Id think that he would want a longer break from all that exposure and internet rage. He certainly didnt put out any fires with his responces, if he writes spiderman someone should just take away his internet for the duration.

I dont know if i can see controversial politics in GW Wilson stories? aside from gender and religion the themes of spiderman and msmarvel are about doing good, responsibility and power and all that mushy stuff. (granted ive only read a handful of msmarvel trades so i may have missed something) Another thing entirely is that Wilson might not want to write about peter parkers adventures...

oh and im one of those dinosaurs that dont read twitter, even so i dont think twitter should decide if someone can write or not

Zdarsky could work since I also think spectacular is very fun, might fit better on a smaller title if his Howard the Duck is anything to go on, depends on if editorial want to sleep again or not :-)

Zeb wells has done spiderman before, too low profile still imo.

Remender? does he do anything other than very depressing futuristic horror stories nowadays? Dont get me wrong I love Low (and uncanny xforce) but its not really screaming spiderman and fun.

Lack of truly high-profile writers are an issue at marvel at the moment. The ones they have are spread very thin.

Soule?

According to Bleeding Cool the new creative team will be Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley (of Invincible).

I can see that art style meshing for Spider-Man but I have to say it isn’t a creative team that excites me. I will give them a few issues to grab me though.

I like Ottley quite a bit, as he's been consistently really good on Invincible. I'm glad he's getting a shot in the big spotlight. Good on him.

Spencer... fingers crossed that he doesn't shoot himself in the foot with his stories or his ramblings on the interwebs. He was a rising star that couldn't seem to get out of his own way. Maybe he'll redeem himself. I'll probably buy it anyway. My ASM run goes back to the early 1970's, so it's not like I'm going to quit over a less-than-exciting writer. [WebWiz5]

If Ottley is on ASM, is there any word on Immonen's next project? He's arguably my favorite artist in the business right now, so I hope he's working on something compelling.
