2015-2016 Television Ratings

Great show guys. I really enjoyed hearing about the ratings and the placement of the shows. I was surprised that some networks cancelled shows at a certain rating cut off line, but those rating on other networks would have made that show the highest rated show. I hope this becomes a regular episode every rating period.


I wish I would have listened to this episode earlier so I could talk about about it on the Skype call.

and just like comics, I wonder how much streaming or DVR views and ratings are factored into the life span of a series. I don't watch any show live and I'm almost 100% Hulu for most shows that I do watch. And if that show isn't on Hulu I almost never get to watch it--like 2 Broke Girls

Sam - Pitch just said it has one more show (its 9th) before its "season finale" -is that a bad sign for the show returning?

bummed that Houdini and Doyle just got the ax - just ratings or ratings + expensive show casualty?

Pitch has not had more shows ordered. While certainly not a good sign, in this particular case not a death sentence either. Pitch had a smaller number (10) of shows initially ordered to begin with, not 13. Much like Scream Queens last year. Pitch is what most would consider a ratings loser, but Fox is full of those. Pitch's prospects for future episode orders is almost completely based upon the success of the shows that debut on Fox in January. The worse those shows do the better the chances for a second season of Pitch. We are in a new era where networks are struggling to find any successes and the few that are successful are huge hits like Empire. There also isn't the money to quickly throw shows away and pull them from the air, because replacements simply haven't been produced and those hours need to be filled with something. What we are left with on many networks now is a crop of new shows that all are mediocre at best, network executives then have to decide from a group of losers if they can afford to cancel them all or try and save a few because it is cheaper than producing that many new shows for next season. The only real model we have to go off of here of a fall show with a small episode order and no additional is Scream Queens last year. In a similar vain CBS made the choice last year to only order 5 additional episodes (instead of 9) of Code Black giving it a first season total of 18 not 22. This would have been a complete death sentence in years past. However with the ratings decline of Limitless being greater than that of Code Black in the winter and spring along with the complete ratings disaster that was Rush Hour, Code Black got a second season order. So Pitch is not completely dead, but it certainly isn't doing well either.

Houdini and Doyle was cancelled long before it ever aired in many ways. The network simply had no faith in it at all. Once the choice was made to not air the already produced 10 episodes until after May sweeps it essentially became summer filler. It would have needed extraordinary rating to even be considered for renewal.

Yes, Notorious and Conviction were the first two casualties of the year. Unless I'm not seeing something, this is the first year (ever maybe) where not a single show was pulled off the air before airing all produced episodes. There just isn't the money for replacements anymore, networks are seemingly stuck with no option but to let the losers air.

I want to thank Sam and John for the 2016 Fall Television Ratings episode; I listened to it last night and had a blast! It is always nice to hear two fellow comic book fans spin on things. I regularly follow TV ratings news when they are made available. Also, I cannot wait for Riverdale to start.

Regarding the Arrow stuff that was mention. Stephen Amell mentioned that in several places that if the quality of the season five of Arrow was not better than season four, the show should end - http://ew.com/article/2016/11/10/arrow- ... uggenheim/. As of last month, Arrow's Executive Producer and incoming X-Men: Gold writer Marc Guggenheim does not believe season five is the show's last - http://tvline.com/2016/12/04/arrow-seas ... e-changed/. Also, that Bat-character Sam mentioned is supposed to appear on Arrow later this season.

I don't know if we have ever seen no scripted shows in the top 50 but the top 50 being mostly "special events" whether that being award shows, or championship sporting events, or special news programs or reality show finals or scripted show finales or the old event mini series is not new in the least. So while the almost total domination of sports is kind of newer, the top 50 has always been filled with special events of one type or another. Especially in an Olympic year, the lack (only 11 of 48 major broadcasts) of Olympic broadcast on the list and none in the top 15 is I think the most surprising.

I'm glad you enjoyed the show and am very excited to see how that character is brought in.

Sam - are the neilson/arbitron/etc folks working on a system that actually tracks and reflects how the 18-49 viewers watch tv - i dont no anyone who watches scripted tv same day anymore

if they dont its gonna be just a bunch of blue hairs watching depends and Metamucil commercials
