if you can only read 5 comics per Publisher/Indy...

Post by drew »

Well, that's not enough, how about 5 per publisher, that's around 20 books a month (minus double shipped) and for me these are the best, you gotta be reading these, feel free to disagree and make your own list but these are mine:

If you can only read 5 DC Comics:
1. Batman
2. Astro City
3. Batman & Robin
4. Injustice
5. Earth 2

If you can only read 5 Marvel Comics:
1. Superior Foes of Spider-Man
2. Daredevil
3. Superior Spider-Man
4. Thor God of Thunder
5. Hawkeye

If you can only read 5 Image Comics
1. Saga
2. Walking Dead
3. Lazarus
4. Manifest Destiny
5. Sex Criminals

If you can only read 5 Other Publisher's Comics:
1. Mind MGMT (Dark Horse)
2. The Private Eye (Panel Syndicate)
3. Extinction Parade (Avatar)
4. Letter 44 (Oni Press)
5. The Massive (Dark Horse)

Interesting selection bias that you put Image on equal footing as Marvel and DC.

I always find these sorts of things challenging and I'm thankful I've only really had to do it once (when I was between jobs for six month at start of 2009).

Your picks for Marvel and DC are solid ones. Our tastes differ a lot more in the Image and other areas. I'd agree with The Private Eye but put some other titles above Letter 44 (which I enjoy but not as much as some other titles).

Interesting. If you asked me a year ago I was barely following 5 books a months. Now I read about 30 or so a month. Not counting any trades I pick up along the way.

For the only 5 list I would go with:
Archer & Armstrong
Harbinger
Superior Spider-Man (can't believe I'm saying that). This is if it was continuing and not ending soon.

Mark Waid's Green Hornet
Daredevil

Considering that for almost 25 years I considered myself a DC guy it is saying something that there are no DC in my 5. I read a few DC books. But if they ended tomorrow I wouldn't be too worked up about it.

not only equal to but prefered, i drafted a top 10 with image and the other publishers but couldn't come up with 10 must reads for DC or Marvel so had to scale it back

Upon going over my pull list it turns out I'm really well over 40 books each month. Or for John, that's known as a slow week. Lol

I'm still thinking on the 5 comics to put as my top 5 but I did go back and look at January just to see how many books I'm getting and a breakdown by publisher. I have to say I'm a little surprised by a few things. One I'm getting fewer books then I thought not by a lot but I would have guessed 5 more or so. Two I'm getting a lot more indy books then I would have thought.

Here is my personal break down by publisher, I will whittle that down to a favorite 5 and post that sometime.

77 Total titles

DC - 47
IDW - 7
Valiant - 5
Dark Horse - 5
Dynamite - 4
Image - 4
Marvel - 2
Big Dog Ink - 1
Bongo - 1
Zenescope - 1

The list is DC heavy but a pretty good mix after that.

I read the first arc and it just didn't do it for me. Which is too bad because I'm a big fan of what Valiant is doing and really want them to succeed.
