Previews Spotlight #060 (Oct->Dec): Oct 12th, 5pm pacific
Previews is coming out on October 3rd, the Previews call will be on Friday Oct 12th at 5pm Pacific / 6pm Mountain / 7pm Central / 8pm Eastern.
Submissions for the Previews Spotlight #060 show should be in by Saturday Oct 13th.
As always, get on Skype around the start time (or join any time after, the call can run 4 hours of rousing comics chat) and look for BobBretall or thejohnmayo & message to get joined into the call.
Of course you can start sending in submissions as soon as you have them done. Sending them in early is appreciated as it give us more time to organize the clips and plan out the episode.
Discuss any of the new comics AND call dibs on reviewing any particular comic on this thread.
Remember: We encourage anyone to send in a short audio clip where they can talk about any book that's coming out in the upcoming Previews that they are really excited about. The email address to send the clips to is TheGuys@ComicBookPage.com. (Some people were only send them to either just John or just Bob and we both need to get them to prepare to recording the episode. By using TheGuys email address, the email goes to both Bob and John.)
PLEASE: Each featured item should be in a separate audio file.
We would also appreciate it if you put the page number followed by the full name of the item in the filename. If you don't know the page number, that is fine. Just leave it off. But having the full name of the item the clip is for makes it much easier for us to organize the files and prepare for recording the episode.
Tips on how to record a clip can be found here.

Looks like it's the same "covert hit squad" concept that Uncanny X-Force started with. There everyone had black/grey outfits, here everyone seems to have black/red outfits. In both cases they seem to be a hit squad of heroes.THUNDERBOLTS #1 & 2
DANIEL WAY (W) • STEVE DILLON (A)
Red Hulk, Venom, Elektra, Deadpool, the Punisher. Forget the courts, the jails, the system — this team of Thunderbolts fights fire with fire, targeting the most dangerous and lethal players in the Marvel Universe with extreme prejudice. Led by General “Thunderbolt” Ross, AKA the Red Hulk, this hand-picked team of like-minded operatives is going to make the world a better place…by all means necessary.
Very original when it was called Battle Royale. Slightly less original when it was call "The Hunger Games". 3rd time's the charm? Is Marvel still the "House of Ideas", or now the "House of Re-deas"?AVENGERS ARENA #1
DENNIS HOPELESS (W) KEV WALKER (A)
Trapped on an isolated island, 16 superhuman young adults (including cult faves like members of the Runaways, The Avengers Academy and Darkhawk) are given a chilling ultimatum by their demented captor: Fight or die…only one will walk out alive! Thus begins a primal battle that will test the skills, stamina and morals of each combatant. Welcome to Murder World, where the secrets are plenty, alliances are fleeting, and the key to victory might be rewriting the rules of the game. Who will survive?
I know. I really was planning on trying all the Marvel Now books but the double shipping on a lot of them is really putting me off. I will end up buying some of the new books but a lot less than I would have. I think this is a mistake on Marvel's part, especially with double shipping $3.99 books done by "new" talent.BobBretall wrote: Marvel really tagged me on double-ships this month.
Well, don't forget the Cable & X-Force series and the new Uncanny X-Force series. It seems they are going for multiple covert hit squads. I am staying away with this one and maybe try the Cable and New Uncanny X-Force book.BobBretall wrote: Looks like it's the same "covert hit squad" concept that Uncanny X-Force started with. This one I might try the first issue but I am on fence because of double shipping and the idea doesn't really appeal to me. At least this one is a $2.99 book. But for Marvel being the "House of Ideas", I think that House closed down a long time ago.BobBretall wrote: Very original when it was called Battle Royale. Written by Chris Ryall Art by Sam Kieth
To combat the catastrophic death of a decaying Japan, survivors create genetically engineered supertrees-wooden leviathans capable of supporting entire cities suspended above the radioactive wastes below. Traveling via jetpacks to stay above the toxic air below, the survivors must also band together against the Hollows, irradiated husks whose humanity has been supplanted by an unquenchable desire to consume human energy!

story DUFFY BOUDREAU art WENDELL CAVALCANTI cover MICHAEL AVON OEMING
100 YEARS AFTER THE FALL... A NEW GREAT GAME BEGINS. A retired soldier on a secret mission... sent out from the walled city and the only life he's ever known into the violent wilderness of the world after the fall! Tribal cults, roaming bands of barbarians, vicious warlords! A startling new take on the post-apocalypse and the most auspicious comics debut of the year!
I'm on the fence about Blackacre & Change. I'm going to need to dig up some preview pages & look at these more closely.CHANGE #1
story ALES KOT art / cover MORGAN JESKE
A foul-mouthed struggling screenwriter who moonlights as a car thief. An obscenely wealthy rapper completely disconnected from the real world. A dying cosmonaut on his way back to Earth. Los Angeles is being toyed with by destructive forces that repeatedly find the city through time and swallow it whole, and those three are the only people able to save it – if they survive the fanatics who live in the hills, National Security Agency agents, and the horrors that lurk in the Pacific Ocean.
This is the penultimate issue of the Hip Flask stuff by Ladronn, NOT the penultimate issue of Elephantmen. Previous Hip Flask offerings by Ladronn are Concrete Jungle & Mystery City.HIP FLASK: OURBOROUS
story RICHARD STARKINGS art / cover LADRONN
Ladronn, known for his work on HIP FLASK: MYSTERY CITY returns for the penultimate issue in the series. Sahara is dead, but both Hip Flask and Obadiah Horn are determined to save her!
This looks fun, I'd like to see some preview material about it, though.I LOVE TROUBLE #1
story KEL SYMONS art / cover MARK A. ROBINSON
"DISAPPEARING ACT" Felicia Castillo, a New Orleans grifter, is on the run from mobsters in our premiere issue, when she discovers she possesses an unusual superpower in the middle of a plane crash.
Yay! Luther Strode returns!!!THE LEGEND OF LUTHER STRODE #1
story JUSTIN JORDAN art / cover TRADD MOORE
Luther Strode lives. Five years after losing everything, Luther has become more than a nightmare for the evil men in his city… he has become a legend. But somebody is hunting the bogeyman, and he has dangerous allies that Luther will never expect. Luther Strode lives; but for how long?
They had me at "Brian Wood"....MARA #1
story BRIAN WOOD art / cover MING DOYLE & JORDIE BELLAIRE
MARA is the story of an especially gifted woman in a sports-and war-obsessed future. Young Mara Prince is at the top of the world, a global celebrity in a culture that prizes physical achievement above all else. After she manifests supernatural abilities on live TV, she becomes famous all over again but for the worst reasons. Integrating themes of superpowers, celebrity worship, corporate power, feminism, and political brinksmanship, MARA takes a classic genre to new places.

Did you see Boom's new title in December? I forget the title but it's the same thing, bunch of heroes trapped and forced to fight to the death. Yikes, someone throw in the flag already.

Similar but not much to gladiators or Lord of the Flies, imo.abysslord wrote: More like "Original when it was gladiators fighting in a ring, pretty original when it was called Lord of the Flies, somewhat original when it was called battle Royale ....etc."

Battle Royale was teenagers/young adults sent away and forced to fight to the death, pretty much exactly like Avengers Arena.
Gladiators were fairly different, sometimes larger staged battles, often one-on-one or two-on-two and done for the direct amusement of a crowd in an arena in a town. Boom's title seems more like gladiator-style combat.
Lord of the Flies has a group of boys marooned who start doing crazy stuff, but they were not put on an island for the express purpose of engaging in a death match.
