Do people like DC 8-issue mini-series format that they have been doing for the past three years?
I personally don't. I unfortunately read all of them and found that the storylines could have been told at most within a 6 issue regular-size mini-series. The last straw was that the current Rann/ Thanagar: Holy War had two one-shot spin-offs because, I guess, 8 issues wasn't enough to tell the story. If DC wants to get new readers to try new books, they shouldn't do it by publishing an 8 issue mini-series. It is a huge commitment on the reader's part.
I don't believe that these books have been that successful, but DC continues to do these type of mini. Why do you guys think DC continues to use this format or do you think this is a great format?

The problem with the Main story + backup format that these series tend to take is that if you don't like the backup, then you're paying for content that you don't care for.
I liked how Starlin wove the main feature together with the backup in the one with Capt. Comet & The Weird. I didn't care for (& stopped buying) the one with Spectre/Dr. Fate. In general, DC seems to do these with 2nd-tier characters & seem to be trying to get a combined audience for some characters related by genre ("space" in this case).
I'm enjoying the Rann/Thanagar series so far, and you can listen to John & I talk about the Hawkman Special that ties into it on Ep. 52 that comes out on Monday (as a Preview, we both liked it & think it's a "must buy" for anyone who likes Hawkman).

I absolutely love the Rann/Thanagar Holy War. It is some of the best Starlin. I am onboard for anything space that Starlin is doing because he is knocking them out of the park as far as I am concerned. The books are so good to me that I read them more then once and that is a rarity. I have not read the Hawkman special but I am sure I will enjoy it.
As far as the eight issue format I have really enjoyed it for what I have read to date. Mystery in Space was awesome. I loved Tales of the Unexpected. I think in those I needed eight issues to get the full stories and 4 might not have been enough. As far as Rann/Thanagar I wish the numbers were there to make that sucker ongoing as it is the top of my stack almost always.
The way Rann/Thanager is written I am sure you will not need to buy Hawkman unless you really want to know what is going on with Hawkman.
