Comic-Con International: San Diego 2008

Both Bob and I will be at Comic-Con International: San Diego again this year.

We are thinking about doing a group dinner Thursday evening. No firm plans have been made for that other than it will be at a place that can handle my gluten-free/dairy-free needs. If you are interested in joining us, please let us know.

I'm about halfway through the episode and, not surprisingly, you guys are really hitting on some great advice.

John, the thought of "Spam singles" is enough to make me convulse. I realize you have gluten and dairy constraints but couldn't something like a nice piece of grilled chicken or some fresh lunch meat work better than SPAM!?

Back to the advice, really sound stuff. One of my personal frustrations with the NYCC was the inability to really store anything. I had to carry around everything I brought with me and stuff I bought, and it got tedious.

You may mention this later on the 'cast, but in case you didn't...

*** Shower and put on deodorant
*** Brush your teeth
*** Bring gum and/or mints

Before everyone laughs, I have to tell you that a frighteningly large chunk of our convention-going brethren seemingly forget basic hygiene. It gets RIPE at a con and sometimes I feel like these guys just don't have someone keeping them grounded in the reality of their own funk.

Do you know where I can get some grilled chicken that comes in single servings that are ready to eat and can survive being in a backpack all day?

The Spam singles aren't great but they are convenient. The *only* thing I've found at the convention center that I can eat is the insanely expensive hot dogs and only it I can get one that hasn't been put into a bun. (Removing the hot dog from the bun doesn't work. It has had contain with the bun and the gluten and can make me physically ill.)

So, while the Spam singles may *sound* nauseating, 99% of what they have at the convention center *literally* is nauseating for me.

I usually have a bag of gluten free pretzels with me too.

At the very least, the spam stops the craving for food.

Going to a convention like this with major food restrictions is a challenge. But so far I haven't thrown up in the middle of the exhibit hall and my plan is to keep it that way.

And for the "fanboy funk", keep in mind that some of us aren't exactly in prime physical condition and hiking around the convention can be a bit taxing. Personally, I find hiking the eight city blocks across the exhibit hall with a backpack on does make me sweat a bit. I think the best way for the "fanboy funk" to be massively reduced would be to install moving walkways in the convention center.

Understood re: the food. I personally grill up a ton of skinless chicken breasts over the weekend and wrap them up in ziploc bags to bring to work each day. Works great.

As to fanboy funk, sorry but I'm not buying that walking around a con is an excuse for funk. Antiperspirants work REALLY well these days and, if someone is THAT funky, bring a frigging stick of deodorant with you in the bag. There is NO excuse for the smell at cons, NONE. It's just bad hygiene. I can spend an entire day at a beach club in South Beach in 100 degree weather, or be on a golf course with friends for 6 hours sweating our (bleep) off in polo shirts and NEVER smell a hint of B.O. I'm supposed to believe that a fanboy can't keep himself smelling good because of walking a few football field lengths over the course of a full day? C'mon now.

Well, I personally shower & use deodorant, but I did not want to harp on the ubiquitous "please wash" advert.

People who have a clue will already do this. Those that do not are probably not going to have a lightbulb go on listening to a comics podcast

PS: I'm on a low-carb diet. While I will not end up in the hospital if I eat a piece of bread, I also choose not to eat it. I'm on the same page with Wood as to John love of Spam singles.

I bring:
* Nuts from Trader Joes (in small ziplocs)
* Slim Jims -OR- Beef Jerky

These are generally gluten free and do not make me look like I'm from Hawaii.

Thanks for the iCal schedule John, it is gonna really help me out. I was always one of those people who wanted to see more panels but would always forget to get about them until it was to late.

I'm glad you found the iCal stuff handy. It was easy to put together and something I wish ComicCon would do.

I'll be available Thursday and Friday nights. Bob was suggesting we do Friday night to avoid anyone thinking we are trying to compete with a meetup for other podcasts (figuring most of them will do a dinner thing after the podcasting panel Thursday).
