The new Previews hits the stands on Wed Oct. 29th!!

The November Previews call will be on Friday Nov 7th at 5pm Pacific / 6pm Mountain / 7pm Central / 8pm Eastern.

As always, get on Skype around the start time (or join any time after, the call can run 4 hours of rousing comics chat) and look for thejohnmayo or BobBretall and message them to get joined into the call.

Submissions for the Previews Spotlight #013 show should be in by the end of Saturday Nov 8th. Of course you can start sending in submissions as soon as you have them done. Sending them in early is appreciated as it give John and I a bit more time to plan out the episode.

Remember: We encourage anyone to send in a short audio clip where they can talk about any book that's coming out in the upcoming Previews that they are really excited about.
PLEASE: Each featured item should be in a separate audio file.

While, I'm here, I have a quick comment regarding these previews episdodes. While I enjoy them, it kind of bugs me when you guys play a submission, and then don't comment on it. It's as if you're just blowing it off: "o-kay..... let's just jump to our next submission... "

Not that you have to comment on everything, but, well, it is your show, and I'd rather you be commentators than DJ's.

That said, I don't have my Previews yet, so I don't know if anything will move me enough to record my thoughts.

I see your point on this but if we commented on everything, these episodes would run closer even longer than they do.

The intent isn't to blow off the submission but to keep the episode moving along. And, frankly, sometimes there just isn't anything meanful for us to comment on. I mean, I get over 150 items a month but don't really have anything particularly compelling to say about most of them.

I guess my question would be what you like us to comment on about the submissions?

From a production stand point, I'd be happy with Bob and I just recording an opening, closing and a few submissions of our own and then compiling the episode together from those pieces and the submissions. It would reduce the amount of time it takes for me to put the episode together down dramatically.

But, based on your comments, I suspect that you wouldn't really care for that style of an episode.

As it is, it takes me between half an hour to an hour (depending on how many submissions there are) to prepare the submissions before Bob and I record. Bob and I then usually spend about 15 to 30 minutes organizing the agenda for the show and then around 90 to 120 minutes recording the episode. We play the submissions during the recording so we can comment on them when/if we have things to say about them. Then, once all of that is done I spend another two or three hours on the post-production before posting the episode. Sometimes the post-production goes quick. Other times it can get really involved if there are audio issues.

If we switched to a format of an intro followed but clips seperated by audio cues (like we play right be for the "next week" clip on the Weekly Comics Spotlight) and an ending, the pre-production and recording times drops substantially and the post-production gets a lot easier. But, while that would be a much easier way to do the episodes, it goes more towards the DJ approach than the commentors style you seem to enjoy.

I don't want to switch to the simpler production style if it would be a big turn off for you guys. But, given how rough of a weekend it can be with the marathon Previews teleconference on a Friday night followed by the Weekly Comics Spotlight recording on Saturday morning, editing that episode for a Monday morning release and spending all of Sunday morning recording the Previews Spotlight, I'd like to streamline the process for the Previews Spotlight episodes if at all possible.

I'd like to hear what everybody else thinks about this.

I don't have a problem with the current format as I do alot of submissions that mainly John doesn't listen to and only some of the Bob reads and doesn't really have anything to bounce off John due to lack of knowledge on the book. I just look at it as making people aware of alot of the books that aren't covered on any of the normal shows that the guys do.

And to the credit of that people have emailed me that they liked my picks and have in turn started listening to Kryptographik and Welcome to Heavenside.

I do like it when there is some comment on some of my submissions, like on the Red Star Sword of Lies TPB from last month, but I don't expect it since some of the things I talk about only have a limited audience and if the guys have nothing to say about the book due to not reading it or not liking it I don't think that would work as entertainment for any of us.

Part of what I love about your submissions, Damian, is that they are things I generally don't read. Having the scope of these episode expanded beyond just the items that Bob and I read is the whole point of the submissions. So, that fact that I don't have much to say about you picks is actually a large part of why they are so valuable to the show.

I can appreciate this, however, sometimes we have submissions for stuff we do not read or have no desire to read.

It's not that we're blowing a submission off by not commenting, but just because something is not my cup of tea does not mean it won't appeal to someone else, so in those cases, I generally try to let the comments of the guest reviewer stand on their own.

There is so much different stuff in Previews that nobody can have something to say about everything in there.

I agree that must be a bear to edit all those sounds clips together. I'm ok with the above scenario as the previews episode would still be a valuable tool for me. I enjoyed last month's previews episode. From that I'm now picking up Hellblazer #250, Marvel's Eye of Camera #1 and the Remnant #1. I was on the fence about those three titles and leaning towards not getting them until I listened to that episode. How about if you and Bob just picked like two outside submissions per month to comment on. Instead of having to talk about most or all of them. Maybe try to pick the submissions from two different people each month.
