IDW: More Artist's Editions announced @ SDCC

Post by BobBretall »

WALLY WOOD’S EC STORIES: ARTIST’S EDTION. The third in the Artist’s Edition series, focuses on one of the all-time greatest comic book artists, and at the absolute peak of his creative powers: Wally Wood. What Bill Gaines achieved with EC Comics was quite likely, pound for pound, the finest comics line ever produced, and Wally Wood was one of their mainstays, who set an incredibly high artistic standard.

"It's wonderful to see such an amazing tribute to Wally Wood. IDW has done a top notch job," said Cathy Gaines-Mifsud. "My Dad would be thrilled, as would Wally."

An oversized, hardcover collection, WALLY WOOD’S EC STORIES: ARTIST’S EDITION will present Wood’s art the same size as it was originally drawn, and in a book measuring an amazing fifteen inches by twenty-two inches. As with all of IDW’s Artist’s Editions, the art presented will be scanned from the original pages to ensure the highest possible quality reproduction. While appearing to be in black and white, each page was scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for instance, white-out corrections and blue pencil notations.

“I love EC Comics,” said Artist’s Editions Editor Scott Dunbier, “and Wally Wood is one of my all-time favorite artists—when he’s at his best, no one can touch him.”

WALLY WOOD’S EC STORIES: ARTIST’S EDTION ($125, hardcover, black and white, 144 pages, 15” x 22”) will be available in October. Pre-order through IDWPublishing.com or local retailer. ISBN 978-1-61377-098-6.
I'm on the fence about this one.......

But THIS ONE I AM ALL OVER!!!!!!
JOHN ROMITA’S THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. This must-have collector’s hardcover is the fourth in IDW’s Artist’s Edition series and will offer one hundred and forty-four pages of original Romita Spider-Man art.

Romita took over the art duties on Spider-Man after series co-creator Steve Ditko left the book. It was a hard act to follow, but Romita would soon make the book his own and go on to be arguably the most popular Spider-Man artist to ever draw the wall-crawler.

“John Romita Sr. is one of the most beloved artists to ever pencil for Marvel,” said Artist’s Editions editor Scott Dunbier, “his work is beautiful, the lines he lays down exquisite!”

An oversized, hardcover collection, JOHN ROMITA’S THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: ARTIST’S EDITION will feature 144 pages of beautiful stories and a gorgeous cover gallery. All the pages in the ARTIST’S EDITION will be scanned from original art to ensure the highest possible quality reproduction. While appearing to be in black and white, each page will be scanned in color to mimic as closely as possible the experience of viewing the actual original art—for instance, white-out corrections and blue pencil notations.

JOHN ROMITA’S THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: ARTIST’S EDITION ($100, hardcover, black and white, 144 pages,) will be available in stores in 2012.

I am all over these, and I've put the Wally Wood one on my current order. Interesting thing to note - on the DCBS spreadsheet the price is $95 instead of $125. And also there is a 35% discount, bringing it down to $63. This is much better than Simonson, where there was only a 7% discout.

Yes, I asked Cameron about this lower price (since the on-line solicit had the price @ $125) .....he said:
DCBS wrote:$95 should be correct (with a better discount than normal as well). I confirmed the price and discount with Diamond late last week.
While I would have skipped this for $125 with a 7% discount, I'm getting it at $95 + 35% off.......

I was curious about that price as well and thought they might adjust it. So good, it is locked in.

I'm glad IDW isn't pussyfooting around either. Announced in July and ready to order in August. Love it!

NEW NEWS:
DCBS wrote:I sent an e-mail to IDW to confirm the Wally Wood price and discount and they said that Previews is correct. The $95 price is actually the price that retailers have to pay. The DCBS price is going to be $118.75. IDW has sent a correction to Diamond. We apologize for the problem.
So it's not going to be cheap after all. $118.75 is a mere 5% discount.....

I'm not going to be getting this after all.......

It's a chunk. Easily over half my budget. I wish they'd put more sample pages up to entice me.

Given that there is such a marginal discount there's no real reason to pre-order it. The Thor one is still in stock & available for sale, and the Rocketeer one was available for quite a long time after it was published.

The high price generally keeps these things from selling out immediately.

If you really want it but it's too big a budget hit this month, save up $20 per month, by the time you have the price in 6-7 months you should be able to buy it then.

atomic99,

Have you seen these scans from the book? They're quite large and detailed, although not as large as the book is going to be.

No, I had not. Thank you!

Amazing work. I think I still have to get this one.

When I look at Mark Schultz's XENOZOIC TALES (and THAT would be an incredible Artist's Edition), I see a lot of old style Frazetta comic book style. But that last sample shows that maybe Schultz was looking at some Wally Wood as well.

You're right about the Wood influence on Mark Schultz. When the first Xenozoic stories appeared I was turned off by how nakedly influenced he was by the EC artists, especially Wood, Williamson, and Frazetta, but over time he integrated all his influences into an elegant style recognizably his own.
