From the Marvel press release: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page ... e&id=29145

Geared for new and long-time readers alike, the all-new Marvel: Point One initiative delivers the perfect jumping on points for the biggest super hero series in the world!
So how was a story all about the new Venom the perfect jumping on point for ASM?

It seems to me if the fans have been confused from the beginning about what the .1 program is supposed to be then Marvel hasn't done their job of explaining it. I don't think it's a matter of " these people don’t really know what they’re talking about. " as "these people" not knowing what Marvel is talking about.

It seems to me that if Marvel had called these Annuals instead of 0.1 then half the complaints by most people would not even have come up.

Sales are a measure of success, but many of the best titles I read each month are toward the bottom of the sales rankings. So being a good idea does not always translate well to being a sales success.

I think that's a really good point, but it all comes down to sales. I think annuals sell worse than their regular title, while the point ones sold at the same level as (or better, if you believe Brevoort) than the regular title.

Yes, it was defensive. It was also a load of BS. The numbers that make Marvel think they are doing so terrific are the numbers of what is being bought by the retailers. Since they bribed us with lots of free variants and other crap to buy the first bunch of issues, of course things are going to look great to them.

The real test is whether the retailers could move the issues, not whether Diamond could. From what I have seen the retailers haven't been able to and it's not helping increase the sales of the later issues. This second part illustrates Bob's point about the real success being in whether it works to bring in new readers, which I don't think is happening. Anyway, I challenge him to use statistics other than numbers from Diamond to prove his point, I will offer my numbers right now, 1 issue sold out of all of the .1's that have come out so far (which I think is around 90 total that I bought across all issues, but I would have to double check)

[/rant] (wow, used that twice in 1 week, a new record for me)

The troubling part about Brevoort's statement was:
TomBrevoort wrote:Finally, speaking to retailers at the recent Diamond summit, our SVP of Sales, David Gabriel, received numerous requests to make the Point Ones a regular thing, so overall our retailers seem to both have liked them and been able to sell them.
Unless he's boldy lying some retailers are selling them, or at least blowing sunshine up the Marvel SVP of Sales. I'm guessing the retailers who attend the Diamond summit are just the "big guys", maybe these sell in their stores.

In any event, it's all the excuse Marvel needs to be launching a second wave of Point 1s later in the year.

We talk a bit about this on the Mayo Report episode which will be out later this week.

Yeah, it is troubling, but as you say it really is only the big guys that can make it to that. There are plenty of us who can't spend the weekend away from our businesses, or whose businesses can't afford to send us to the summit (or in my case both). And it is possible that he isn't lying, but exaggerating how many said something.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see the numbers from the second wave, I know I don't have any plans to buy anymore at this point.
