Ult Cap America #1 - I'm really digging Jason Aaron's work with Marvel and this was another good mini series. My one beef with it was that I thought the plot line was close to a Wolverine plot he did awhile back. Besides that, it was fun to see Ult Cap kicking (bleep).

Planet of the Apes #1 (Boom!) - I just read the Press preview copy of Planet of the Apes #1 on-line & enjoyed it a lot. It's set between the uprising of the Apes in Battle for the Planet of the Apes & Taylor's arrival in the original Planet of the Apes movie. Timeframe given is 1200 years BEFORE Taylor. Humans can still talk, but young are being born who cannot talk. It's a time of an uneasy co-existence between Apes & humans.

If you're a big fan of the original Apes movies, I think you'll like it. I had ordered only the 1st issue, but will now add the subsequent issues to my DCBS pull list.

Malignant Man #1 (Boom!) -This was REALLY different from what I was expecting, in a good way. I was expecting (from the description of the series) to really not like this at all, and it has a TERRIBLE title. That said, it was a really cool set-up, but the 1st issue was ALL set-up. The 2nd issue of this series will be key, seeing where they go from the basic set-up.

This was like Butcher Baker in that I asked you about it before and you said you weren't interested ... the idea seemed weird and I agree the title isn't the best. Glad to hear it was different from what you were expecting. I've always thought it sounded okay and knowing James Wan was involved was enough for me to check it out. I'll be getting it tomorrow.

Malignant man surprised me in a good way too. The cover / logo echoed with a Resurrection Man vibe which drew me to the title. I think this issues set-up combo of action, intrigue and sci-fi elements caught me well in its net.

The solicit description, name, & cover were all terrible, nothing about this caused me to want to pre-order (kind of like 75% of the Flashpoint minis). BUT, I'm willing to check stuff out in the LCS & see if the actual product outshines the solicit.

I agree with all this. I like the story and I'm interested to continue, but the art was hit and miss for me. Sometimes it looked horrible, other times it was good.

I agree. Cover A, which is what I got, doesn't even make sense yet. I think a better cover, a better description, and a little better title would have sold more books. Malignant Man sounds like a parody.

BobBretall wrote:Butcher Baker The Righteous Maker #1 & 2 (Image) - #1 & 2 came out 2 weeks apart and I didn't mention the title before, so I'll address them both. I like this series. The art is different, in a good way. The 1st issue was far more "in your face" and relied on some macho stereotypes & broad humor for the "oomph". The 2nd issue really surprised me when it actually started to develop some conflict and a story line with the introduction of all those bad guys. Some very cool villains. I also like the comedy relief with the Sheriff chasing him around, very "JW Pepper" (Bond reference)...... In addition, I love Love LOVE the backmatter by Joe Casey. I love it more than the main story.
I agree I like the back matter more than the main story. He's got a very witty stream of consciousness on the state of "comicbooks." The artwork in the issue is not my cuppa' though. It's very stylized and loose. It's not bad art, it's just not my thing. The art actually goes very well with the writing which is also very loose and stylized. I'll get issue #3 a try, but I haven't yet added this to my pull list.

I guess he loves Smokey and Bandit as much as I do because there are at least 6 or so direct quotes/references to that movie in the first two issues...not to mention the CHARACTER of the sheriff is based on him.

So far this title is pretty good, #2 set a good hook.

'68 #1 (Image) - Lots of zombie books out there, but this one was a cool merger of authentic-seeming Viet Nam war w/zombies. (I say "seeming" because I'm no Viet Nam expert, but it felt right to me). I'm also a fan of Nat Jones' art.

I like this comic book a lot. This comic is more interesting to me than what it looks like Hollywood is doing with "Rise of the Planet of Apes." I like the world that the wirter and artist are creating for us. I'd call myself a casual fan of the "Apes" movies. I think you'll get more out of the comic if you have at least seen the first movie from 1968 with Charlton Heston.

Moon Knight #1 (Marvel) - Just picked this up on the strength of the back issue spotlight show, and particularly the comparisons to Batman. I found the issue quite humorous, although whether Spidey's appearance was the main reason, I'm not too sure.

As a relative newbie to comics, and Marvel particularly, I don't think there was enough explanation of the character or what he can do, although the flashbacks to the origin story will hopefully explain things over the coming months. I was disappointed not to see any of his powers/moves, and he is even maskless for most of the issue. I wanted to see him in full action in the Moon Knight persona. I also found the conclusion to the issue very confusing, mainly due to the unclear art, and had to read it a few times over just to decipher what had happened.

Overall I enjoyed the issue, and I'll be adding it to my pull list. Perhaps this will finally get me reading DC/Marvel superhero stuff, rather than just Boom!'s excellent offerings!

I won't see this issue until next week, so cannot comment on it yet, however, if you enjoyed the back issue spotlight episode, pick up some of the trades in the show notes on the BI Spotlight episode. I personally think most recent Moon Knight incarnations have strayed far afield from the original character, emphasizing too much of the "crazy" and too little of the "hero".

Suicide Girls #1 (IDW) - I was expecting this to be more of a "guilty pleasure" book, a'la Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose, but was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty decent storyline with some mystery & intrigue around a repressive organization making people who don't agree with it's views vanish. I enjoyed it, and some REALLY nice pin-ups by Dave Stewart in the back (featuring unclothed girls, so steer clear if that kind of thing offends you).

Gladstone's School for World Conquerors - Image
I happily recommend this book for all ages. It's fun, truly. The art is lively and bright. The story has a nice wit that isn't too saccharine nor fluffy to create instant boredom. It ends with a bit of cliffhanger that makes me want to pick up the next issue, and I can hand it off to any niece or nephew guilt -free, which is sometimes hard to do with a superhero book.

Mystery Society #1. Took me a long time to get to this but I was not disappointed. I read all 5 issues in one sitting and loved it. I hope that we will see another mini because there are more adventures of the Mysteries to be had.

Planet of the Apes #1
Loved the art and the story was decent. I expect the story will grow on me with more issues.
