I'm with Bob every step of the way on this. I heard some fun things about the book. I liked Nick's book Existence 2.0 so I gave it a try. I wish I could forget it too.BobBretall wrote:Forgetless #1 (Image) - Would have been called "Forgettable" if under a truth in advertising clause. The blurb describing this was far more interesting that the delivered issues that was a meandering story that really failed to capture my interest, I won't be continuing with this one.

Fearless Dawn #1 (Asylum) - I went in to reading this that is was going to be a joke with good art. It was that but I was oddly wanting to know what happens next. It's a throwback to art from years past. It reminds me of what I used to read in Heavy Metal in the 80's and early 90's. This issue was released early in the year but didn't make the Diamond catalog minimum order cut-off. It eventually got in to Diamond because a person there saw it and liked it enough to want to get it our there. I'll be back for issue #2.
Battlefields: Happy Valley #1 (Dynamite) - This is the fourth mini-series from Garth Ennis about World War II. I've enjoyed all of them so far and this one is no exception. This is the story of a Australian(or is it New Zealand) bomber crew who are taking on a new pilot. The Happy Valley is an area in Germany frequented by these bombers. The dialogue is very funny and I think Ennis is really in his element with this series.

Angelus #1 (Top Cow) - Pretty good setup issue that was put over the top by the beautiful Stjepan Sejic art. Nice seeing him do an entire book instead of just covers.
Siege #1 (Marvel) - Really weak issue. Tremendous plot holes. Listen to Weekly Comics Spotlight #126 for the entire rant.
Siege: Embedded #1 (Marvel) - Better than Siege. If you like the character Ben Urich this will please you. Nice "Glenn Beck" analog too. That guy is a jerk, I love seeing him parodied.

Orc Stain #1 (Image) - This comic is from the creator behind Wonton Soup. Where Wonton Soup was a mix of an American style with Manga this book is more of a mix of that same style with more of a Heavy Metal/Simon Beasley flair. I think the coloring and setting lend more toward the Heavy Metal style.
The premise is there a fantasy world where Orcs are everywhere, and one leader is looking to unite them. The "hero" is a one eyed safe cracking orc who seems to be making his way through the world by robbing tombs. There is not much of a story in the first issue to speak of, but it was fun for what was there.
I will warn you there is nudity, and I mean, I kid you not, full frontal male orc nudity. This may not be for everyone, but if you did like the Heavy Metal movie or Wonton Soup you might like this issue.

I would hate to add to your fence sitting, but I tried the first issue a few months ago I have to say it landed pretty flat for me. I was expecting the art to be more like the cover, but the interior art was different enough that it left me disappointed. I can see where other people might like, but the humor did not really click for me.BobBretall wrote:I had been on the fence with this one for the exact reason you state above, Ian. I loved Orc Stain #1. Set things up nicely I thought. And the colors! Woot! Gronch!spid wrote:Orc Stain #1 (Image) - This comic is from the creator behind Wonton Soup. Jennifer Love Hewitt's Music Box #1 (IDW)- An detective takes down a serial killer and while going through the evidence room finds a unlabeled music box. He takes it home the music box and when he opens it he gets strange visions. These visions lead to things. Beautiful Michael Gaydos artwork. Very good read.

Outsiders #26 - I really wanted to like this comic. I thought Didio's writing in the past was good and I am big fan of Tan's art. But I thought the writing and the art failed on both counts. The two different artists working on the book that supposed to launch another new direction didn't help. I really felt that the characterization was weak in the book. In retrospect, bring the classic Outsiders characters back has been a big disappointment. I loved the original series (Batman and the Outsiders), but just like Marvel and Alpha Flight, DC has never been able to recapture the magic of the original team. The best thing that DC did with the name "Outsiders" was Judd Winick's comic, which hardly had any of the original members.

Cleaning up a pile of #1s I have read (but not written about) recently.....
Joe the Barbarian#1 (DC/Vertigo) - OK story, but not good enough to get me to buy #2.
Secrets of Sarah Winchester#1 (SLG) - Picked this up at the LCS on the strength of the Drew Rausch art. Very cool story and nice "Templesmith-y" art style. I'll be back for #2!
I Am Iron Man #1 (Marvel) - Basically an adaptation of the 1st Iron Man movie, but nicely done by Peter David with really appealing Sean Chen/Victor Olazaba art.
Marvel Boy: The Uranian #1 (Marvel) - Great story, but art that is really not to my taste. The fact that I WILL pick up #2 of this and not #2 of Joe (see above) is an indication that I'll pick up a #2 if I like the story more readily than if I just like the art.
Spider-Man presents: Jackpot#1 (Marvel) - Fun story and really nice art. I am a big fan of this new character introduced along with the "Brand New Day" story cycle in ASM.

I didn't think Joe was a great first issue. I didn't get a decent enough story or chapter in this one issue. This is one of those "written for the trade" titles. There were three whole pages devoted to the main character just entering his house and going up the stairs to his bedroom. Couldn't that have been done in three panels on one page. The pencils are really nice but the coloring was kind of wonky. I know it's Dave Stewart color, who's usually awesome, but it didn't add anything to the pencils other than a different look. I think I'll wait to hear about how it turns out and possibly pick up the trade.BobBretall wrote:Cleaning up a pile of #1s I have read (but not written about) recently.....

I was always planning on picking up the trade if I liked issue #1. My guess is I liked the story slightly more than you, but I would agree it was more in the OK category. The story reminds me of I Kill Giants from Image which I also picked up in trade.BobBretall wrote:Cleaning up a pile of #1s I have read (but not written about) recently.....

Jackpot #1 - Jackpot #1 by Guggenheim and Melo. What a surprising mini. I really enjoyed Jackpot in Amazing Spider-man but her own book is much better. Great art and well paced story with a great cliff hanger at the end.

Transformers #1 from IDW by Mike Costa and Don Figueroa. The war with the Decepticons is over and the Autobots find themselves battling there one time alley the humans. This is my first Transformers comic since the first 4 issues that Marvel put out. I enjoyed it but still have some reservations. Off to read #2.
