Bob, sounds like an awesome con. How large it it in comparison to some other shows? Roughly how many artists, what sized room? Sounds like there were terrific periods of time to just riff with the artists.

Continuing my Con Report.....Saturday

I started out with another great Ethan VanSciver panel. This guy is both hilarious, fascinating, and very open with answers (since, as he pointed out, neither Didio or Geoff Johns were around to keep an eye on him)......

In the dealer room, I passed by Steve Rude's booth just after he had arrived for the day and got Al Sparrow's name on his commission list at #3. If you EVER want to get a Steve Rude commission, Phoenix is the place to do it. They cost $50 for the same thing he charges $100 (or more) for in San Diego. I have seen them selling similar commissions on-line for $150. Anyway, a good deal for Rude fans.

Lunch today with Al Sparrow & Stephen Reid of "Thugs", along with a bunch of other local artists & writers. Lin Workman dropped by too! I also got a really nice HC sketchbook from Sean Galloway with a lot of his design work from the new Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. Sean did a sketch of the "leonine" Kraven coming up in Season 2 in my Spider-Man sketchbook.

Picked up my Zatanna sketch from Terry Moore and commissioned one with Talent Caldwell's girlfriend (Kristin Allen) who is extremely cute, and is a great artist. She did a great Zatanna.

At the Rude booth, I saw a girl with the best Zatanna outfits I have ever seen. As an example that this is not just my opinion, Steve Rude asked her if she would be willing to come to his studio to pose for him next time he had to do a Zatanna painting!

Tone Rodriguez did a nice black costume Spider-Man in my sketchbook.

After calling Janine & clearing the expenditure with her, I did end up getting a pretty good deal for Amazing Spider-Man #4 & Tales to Astonish #59. He gave me a deal on both of these (if I got them together) and the net result was about 1/3rd off the guide price....This completed my run of Amazing Spider-Man!!! (Still need Amazing Fantasy #15 though)

Fell a bit farther back during Round 3 of the Trivia contest. I'm just old & slow, I could not get my hand up fast enough to be called on as fast as a couple of the other guys there.....

Capped the evening off with the Art Auction which was EXCELLENT. Several pieces went for a LOT, but I got some nice deals on:
* Color Medusa by Kristin Allen (this is stunning, my favorite piece of the convention)
* Zatanna by eBas
* Plastic Man by Jim Valentino

McFarlane was a great sponsor for the event, they had some nice gift bags for everyone who placed a bid (whether you won or not). They contained GNs & toys, pretty nice stuff.

This con is miniscule compared to NY or San Diego. Maybe about half the size of WWLA.

That being said, the attendance is split several ways:
* Star Trek / Sci-Fi fans
* Anime/Cosplay Fans
* Comics fans

So, the Sci-Fi Fans were all about the stars that were there: Wil Wheaton, Marina Sirtis, Brent Spiner, Gil Gerard, Erin Grey, some dudes from BSG that I'm unfamiliar with since I don't watch that show (yet), Peter Mayhew.....

There is all kinds of stuff for the Anime/Cosplay people. Seems like half the folks are here for this aspect of the con.

Now, this is all good, because it give the actual comics fans some pretty easy access to the comics guests, which this year included:
* Ethan VanSciver (Green Lantern/Flash)
* Talent Caldwell (Fathom)
* Mike Kunkel (Magic of Shazam)
* Karl Kesel (FF/Superman/etc.)
* Kaare Andrews (Spider-Man: Reign)
* Jo Chen (who paints the "good" covers for Buffy)
* Steve Rude (Nexus)
* Ben Templesmith (30 Days of Night)
* While Portacio (Wetworks)
* Jim Valentino (Shadowhawk/normalman)
* Rob Liefeld (does not like to draw feet)
* Todd McFarlane (Spawn)
* Eric "eBas" Basaldura (variant cover artist supreme)
* Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash)
* Brian Pulido (Lady Death)
* Terry Moore (Echo, SiP)
* Scott Clark (Stormwatch)
* Rick Remender (Fear Agent, Punisher, End League)
* Marat Mychaels (Brigade)
* Andy Kuhn (Firebreather)
* Dave Beaty & Lin Workman (Bushi Tales)
And there were probably 15 other smaller indie artists there besides these guys.

So, in summary, there was a tremendous ratio of artists to attendees who care about comics. Better than ANY con I have ever been to.

Concluding my Con Report.....Sunday

* Terry Moore panel & Karl Kesel panel started the day off. Kesel one was pretty cool, only about 8 of us there, so he just came down and sat with us and we chatted about stuff for an hour. Interesting point he brought up was how Marvel books are done on very tight budgets, and often, he cannot get work on a lower-end book because the budget will not allow for the page rate he is at after 25 years in the industry, which is probably why we're seeing so many names we've never seen before on a lot of Marvel books, these new guys have lower page rates and no additional perks.

*Picked up a pretty cool Jim Valentino Starhawk sketch in the silent auction that ended at noon (for only $16!!!)

* Got a beautiful Red Sonja from Tim Seeley (he was giving all his sketch $$ to Hero Initiative) and another from local artist Ben Glendenning (who was also sketching for Hero). This guy is GOOD, kind of cartoony style, but in a really good way.

* Pretty much wandered around talking to artists & writers until the Trivia finals. I placed 3rd, grabbed a Hellboy trade & figure as my prize, and got out quick to make it to the airport for my flight home......

In the end, I failed at showing restraint, and actually spent quite a lot.

I'm not the least bit surprised by that. I've been saying for years that the cost of content creation is the major financial barrier for new comics. You can't afford to pay the page rates on known creators when lower end books are selling under 10,000 units. The math just doesn't work out.

Interesting vis-a-vis Kesel.

I was chatting with Yanick Paquette and Peter David at last year's NYCC and told Paquette that I was looking forward to more Young X-Men. He then candidly told me that if the numbers didn't pick up, he would have to leave the book because he was a Marvel exclusive and they couldn't justify his page rate based on the books initial sales. Since we all know how few books actually increase from their launch numbers, I knew right then Paquette wouldn't be long for the book.

Sounds like you had a good time Bob. I'm glad that you got to meet Kristen "Foxy" Allen. She's a Chicago native and I had the pleasure of meeting her last year at Wizard World. She commissioned a rather risque MJ for me, and I plan on picking up another piece from her this year at WWC. She was actually in an issue of Tarot, and signed a copy for me.
