The Thanos Imperative: Ignition #1 (Marvel) The next big Marvel cosmic story arc kicks off with this issue. They do a really good job of not only explaining who Thanos is, but they also give a nice writeup of what was going on in the Guardians Of The Galaxy for the last six months or so. They do all of this while still giving a jump start to the event. The last page reveal was quite a surprise yet it makes perfect sense once you see it.

Got this last night, I give a Green rating too. Fun story, much more fun than Avengers #1. Now lets see how New Avengers #1 is.BobBretall wrote: Secret Avengers #1 (Marvel) - This was so ridiculously better than Avengers #1 by Bendis..... Brubaker really told a sharp story and I loved the use of the different characters in situations perfectly suited to their powers/attributes! A new serpent crown story coming up! Classic Avengers!

Roswell, Texas (Big Head Press) - (http://www.bigheadpress.com/roswell) This was originally a web comic and you can read it at the URL listed. It's also available in print on the website or Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Roswell-Texas-L-N ... 0974381454
A great "alternate history" story where Texas didn't lose at the Alamo & the world came out very different. So, when Lt. Gene Roddenberry of the Texas Air Militia shoots down an alien ship over Roswell, Texas in the 1950's we get a really entertaining story.

Agreed. I'm loving the Marvel cosmic books, though I do think they might be a bit inaccessible to people who jump in here and have NOT been reading the previous cosmic stuff.spid wrote:The Thanos Imperative: Ignition #1 (Marvel) The next big Marvel cosmic story arc kicks off with this issue. Hawkeye & Mockingbird #1 (Marvel) - I went into this with low expectations (didn't really care for the "Reunion" mini's 1st issue), but LOVED this book. I'm on-board for this one moving forward, it's been added to my regular pull list.
Avengers Prime #1 (Marvel) - This was NOTHING at all like I was expecting it to be, but I really liked it. Still feeling that Bendis has a bit of trouble with Thor's "voice", and I hope Steve & Tony work things out soon so we don't need a lot of squabbling between them every issues. That said, seeing the "Big 3" Avengers in a book together again was great.
Bulletproof Coffin #1 (Image) - Wow! This was SO GOOD. I think it's not for everyone, kind of quirky art, but I loved it. The story with the "heretofore unknown" comic inserted into the content of the issue, the meta-textual reference to Hine/Kane, etc. This is a "top of the stack" book for me.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the first issue of H&M. I too had low expectations after reading the Reunion mini, but decided to try the first issue anyway. Rob Zombie's Whatever Happened to Baron vonShock #1 (Image) - This is another book where I did not know what to expect. That said, I enjoyed it quite a lot. The basic plot is you have a schlub working as a gopher at the local TV station who, when the schlocky horror-movie host "Uncle Spooky" quits, ends up taking on the role of Host by creating the persona of Baron von Shock. Lots of gratuitous profanity & topless girls makes this a guilty pleasure book with a decent story.
PLUS, how could I not love a book with the following dialogue:
"How about Bob? Bob is a hard working, iron jaw name. Everybody likes a fella named Bob."
"Bob's a cool guy who drives a convertible.....Bob is the mother F***ing man!"
From a topless girl: "Oh Bob! You are the Mother F***ing MAN!"

Heralds #1 (Marvel) - *meh* Story didn't get going in #1 (to my taste), so a pacing problem, and I'm not particularly thrilled with the art (mostly the faces seem a bit "off"). I really need to watch out for these 5 issue minis where Marvel "power solicits" 2 books a month so that the whole thing is ordered before you can see an issue.

Wow! Got 10 #1 issues in this week's DCBS box....time to get reading.....here are the 1st...
Young Allies #1 (Marvel) - There was nothing bad about this one, it just failed to grab me. The art was not to my liking, but that's purely a personal preference. This one is on probation, I'll read #2, but I'm not pre-ordering #3.
Rawhide Kid: The Sensational Seven#1 (Marvel) - What can I say, I LOVE Howard Chaykin's art when he's on his game, and this was some great Chaykin art. Pretty snappy dialogue and some good tongue-in-cheek visual/storytelling moments too.
Predators #1 (Dark Horse) - This was an OK story with a cool reveal at the end but the art was not hitting me the right way. I liked the 6-page backup by Lapham more than the main story. I'm not feeling it enough to get the rest of the series "off the rack". I'll look for this one in the discount bins.
Hack/Slash: My First Maniac #1 (Image) - Not what I was expecting (I thought it was going to be Cassie going up against her Mom). Instead, that event takes up only the very first part of the story and is the ignition point that sets her on her path to slay all slashers. The 1st issue's pacing was a bit slow and is more of an "origin story". She'll be getting to her actual first slasher in later issues. This may or may not be the greatest jumping-on point for new fans. On the positive side it has her actual "origin", on the negative, it does not get deep into the real action in the 1st issue, though as a TPB, I suspect it will be a good jump-on. Big thumbs up as a pre-existing fan, though.
Buzzard #1 (Dark Horse) - Beautiful art by Eric Powell as he explores the Buzzard character from the Goon. Starts on kind of a "slow roll" but promises to deliver some (bleep)-kickin' action in subsequent issues. "Billy the Kid's Old-Timey Oddities 6-page backup by Powell & Kyle Hotz was pretty good too!

Avengers Academy #1 (Marvel) Some writers just speak to you as a reader. Christos Gage is one of those writers for me. I love his dialog choices and his pacing is spot on in most case. I dug the dynamic between the students and the teachers. The twist at the end was not that big of a twist, but it does setup an interesting dynamic between teachers and the students.
Thanos Imperative #1 (Marvel) I like Marvel Cosmic and this continues a great story arc they have been telling for years now. I will say this issue felt more like the second issue of a seven part story instead of the first issue of a six part story. If you are all interested in picking up this mini you really have to pick up Ignition first. Overall it is a good story with decent art. I am not sure why Brad Walker has not been given this assignment since he seems to work so well with these characters.

Tom Strong & the Robots of Doom #1 (DC/Wildstorm) - This was a pretty good story, and I liked it, but not really enough to survive it being one of the first 22-page books DC has decided to try out the $3.99 price point on. Sorry Tom, I'll be seeing you in the $1 bins....
Murder of King Tut #1 (IDW) - I don't know if it was the storytelling, or me being somewhat "slow" but I had a had time following what was going on in ancient Egypt. Without studying it really hard, I'm still not too sure who "Aye" is. I suspect people who have read James Patterson's novel that this is based on or who are huge Egyptology fans are going to get a lot more out of this that I did coming in cold. I plan to give the rest of this series a miss.
Avengers Academy #1 (Marvel) - Really great comic & worthy successor to Avengers Initiative. I've always like the "training of super-heroes" aspect, and these are some cool new characters with a real nice twist at the end of the story.
So far, of the relaunched Avengers titles, I'd rate them:
1) Secret Avengers
2) New Avengers
3) Avengers Academy
4) Avengers Prime
5) Thunderbolts (essentially an Avengers title since Luke Cage is running the team)
6) Avengers

Tom Strong and the Robots of Doom #1 - I picked this one of the shelf solely because I enjoyed the preview that they have been showing in DC Comics. I was not disappointed as the story sucked me in a nightmarish world (kinda like JSA fatherland) where the Nazi regime is in control of the world and the real kickeer is who the leader is. The art was very solid and I found it worth the price of admission. I will be adding this to my pull list.
Avengers Academy #1 - Simply the relaunch of Avengers Initiative and Christos Gage is what made me try this book and I was not disappointed. The characters introduced were all solid and the story had a bit of a hook a the end.
Young Allies #1 - Sean McKeever never lets me down and here I really enjoyed the story. Artwork was ok but I am a story guy so this made the cut. Also what helped here is that I really like this bunch of characters and liked Toro the new edition.
Area 10 - Vertigo Crime HC was the best of the bunch. Christos Gage knocked this mystery/crime story out of the park. It involves Trepanation which is the process of drilling a hole in the head to seek enlightenment. Chris Samne black and white was amazing.
All great in my opinion.

The Sentry Fallen Sun #1 - It is a shame that I will remember the Sentry mostly for his death but I loved this issue. I know there is a lot of hate out there for this character but I was found him different than most characters and this funeral issue was very powerful to me. I know it did not work for others but it hit me in the right spot (5/5)
