Atlas #1 (no explicit spoilers)

Post by BobBretall »

I thought the #1 issue was OK. Not great, OK. It was mostly a 3-D man issue, there was little Atlas in it, maybe not the best move for the first issue of an Atlas series, but that's just my opinion.

It was well written, but you have to notice that it's $3.99 for a standard 22-page comic (and at that only a 17 page main story with a 5 page backup). BUT..... issues #2 & 3 are only $2.99. Looks like Marvel was just taking advantage of the fact that #1 issues sell better to rape their loyal fans of an extra $1.....

So, sleazy pricing maneuver on the part of Marvel to score some extra $$ on a #1, questionable choice to have very little story featuring the main team in the 1st issue, AND a shorter than normal 17-page main story. These combine to make a rocky start, but I'm hopeful this will recover over time, I do like Jeff Parker's writing.

NOTE: in the same week, DC puts out the 1st issue of the new Legion of Super-Heroes book that is 39 pages of story for $3.99. Where do you get the best story value? For me it was with Legion (separate thread to discuss this title: http://www.comicbookpage.com/forum/view ... =9157#9157

I picked up this issue to try the book but I haven't pre-order the other issues. To be honest, I tried it out before and it didn't knock my socks off.

The $3.99 for the first issue is always leave a bad taste in my mouth.

What that pricing 1st issues did for me is talk me out of a $2.99 series I would probably get. If I am lucky I can catch the change in the next month preview and then shoot an email to DCBS asking for the first issue. But most of the time, I have locked myself into a monthly order with little wiggle room in the budget.

So then, I just think of getting the trade, and often I forget I wanted it when that time comes. I have come to expect it somewhat now, so if I am interested at all, I just get the deeply discounted first issue and then wait to see what the price will be next month.

I'm of two minds on this comic.

From a business standpoint, I sort of have to scratch my head and wonder, "What the?..." because let's face it - the last several minis and ongoings with these character didn't exactly ignite the sales charts. I'm curious why Marvel is giving these guys so much exposure (we didn't see this type of support for Fraction's The Order.

On the flipside - I like these characters and really liked the first mini-series (though I found the series less enjoyable.) This issue was good with the promise of the return of the Dire Wraiths, but I'll probably wait until it's collected in some format to get the whole thing.
Comics, Metal, 70's TV shows - yeah, I know. Pretty sad. ;)
