Batman Reborn - Three Months Later

Post by HassanT »

Well, it has been almost three months since Batman was "Reborn". I am curious on what people are thinking about the Batman line of titles and which ones people are reading or dropping.

Batman - I have to admit, I have been really surprised on how much I really enjoyed Judd Winick on this book. I did enjoyed his first couple of Batman story arcs he did a few years ago, but I never thought it would be this good. I am going to keep getting the book, even with Tony Daniel doing a six issue arc since Judd will be back after that and taking the book to number 700.

Detective Comics - Ok, only two issues came out so far, but those two issues were really good. I am still not sold on the Question story yet. It is good but nothing special. It is the main story that is really wanting me to read more.

Batman: Streets of Gotham - This one I am liking this less and less. I stopped pre-ordering the book after #4, because this is the weakest Batman book right. I don't mind the artist but this isn't his strongest work. I am also tired of the Hush character again. Paul Dini did such a great job on making him a good villain and then he ruined it by overuse of the character. I am not digging the Manhunter backup. This should have been a Huntress, Manbat, or Arzeal backup. Manhunter has nothing to do with the Batman universe and therefore a poor choice of character to use.

Gotham Sirens - I wanted to like this issue but I thought number 2 was subpar with the lame way Catwoman got out of previous issue's cliffhanger. This is another title where Hush is in the book for some reason. Yes, it makes sense story wise but I don't think it is wise to have him appear in two books. I stopped pre-ordering this book with #4.

Red Robin - This one I still like. I think Chris Yost is doing a good job. I am glad that Ramon Bachs is leaving the book. He isn't a bad artist but he isn't an artist that wows me.

Batgirl - I just read the first issue and I am going to wait until I read #2 before I decide to continue with it. I am not a big fan of Lee Garbett's art. Obviously, if I am said I going to wait until #2 to decide, I didn't love or hate the issue. I thought it was good. The art is probably the thing that hurt the book the most.

Batman and Robin - This is Grant Morrison at his best.

I am enjoying every single one of them. My favorites are Batman, Batman and Robin, and Detective.

Batman - 4/5 Really good title.

Batman and Robin - 5/5 This is "Good Grant Morrison" as opposed to "confusing/hallucinogenic Grant Morrison". If only Final Crisis had been like this book.

Detective Comics - 5/5 Best of the bunch

Gotham Sirens - 3/5 This one is OK. I'm still getting it, but I'm not sure for how much longer. I'm just not that excited about the characters/situations.

Batman: Streets of Gotham - 2/5 *meh*. This is the "wow, just one too many" title in the Batman family. Dropped it after the 1st issue. If I see it in a 50 cent bin, I'll pick it up, if I don't I can safely life without it.

Red Robin - 2/5 Didn't like the characterization of Tim Drake, dropped it.

Batgirl - I don't have this one yet.

Batman - Haven't read lately

Detective - I'm diggin it. The "Alice" villain is cool, and I'm into what Rucka has done so far. ..and the art is outstanding.

Batman and Robin - The best Bat-Book right now, hands down. I dropped all the Bat titles during RIP, and hesitated to buy this when I saw Morrison was writing, but he is really redeeming himself with this one!

Streets of Gotham - I like it. I would prefer to just have Gotham Central back of course, but I'm enjoying this.

Gotham Sirens - Yeah...I don't know about this one. I'm not ready to give up yet, but it's usually the last thing I read in the pile. Hopefully Paul Dini can work this title into something cool? Again..I'd prefer to have Birds of Prey back..(is there a theme here?)

Red Robin - Have not read

Batgirl - coming in my next DCBS shipment
Batman: The Widening Gyre - Next DCBS Shipment

And did you guys notice, along with Batman... Batman Confidential, and Batman : The Unseen, will be twice monthly in October and November. What could the reason be for this? Do they want to bump up the sales figures at the end of the year?

They think they can sell the extra comics......

In general, I don't think "casual readers" are picking these books up. People are either going to buy them or not, so putting them out bi-weekly just lets DC get the $$ quicker on these titles that are not selling a tremendous amount of units.

As an example, I don't get Confidential, it could be bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, would not matter, I'm not getting it. Conversely, I get any series that Moench/Jones do on Batman, so I'm getting "The Unseen". Does not matter to me that it's twice a month, I'm ordering it. A side benefit i getting the series out quicker so they can put out the trade sooner (I suspect a lot of folks buy these in trade).
