Warren Ellis

Post by spectre71 »

So I'm somewhat curious to hear what peoples thoughts are on Warren Ellis. Personally, I have read quite a few works of his and they are good and somewhat have strange or weird appeal to them. Not Alan Moore weird but more of a Steampunk weird/strangeness. I have read Ignition City, Anna Mercury, Aether Mechanics, and others. One I didn't get into was Fell. Did I miss something or what alot of people really seemed to like that one a lot so I am curious should I give a it second try?

I definitely recommend giving it a second try. I found it to be an excellent read.

Warren Ellis is an exceptionally talented writer. Unfortunately, some of his projects suffer from exceptionally long delays. For example (and this is one of the longest delayed projects of his, so this is a worst case situation not a typical case) Planetary #1 was released on 1999-02-03. The series will end with issue #27 should it ever get released. While it is rumored to have been recently completed, the issues till hasn't been solicited.

Here is the shipping history for Planetary.

Note how an entire calendar years go by without a single issue shipping.

Another MIA projects of his is Newuniversal: Shockfront.

While I enjoy some of his writing, the scheduling of some of his projects leaves a lot to be desired.

For my money, Ellis is the best writer in comics today. Like John, I do have my complaints about his "time management." It would appear that he has a tendency to overextend himself and move from project to project. I don't enjoy the delays of the monthlies (I mean, who does?) so I gravitate towards his collected works. And to me that's where Ellis really shines. Some of the best runs in comic history stem from his incredibly creative mind:

Transmetropolitan
Iron Man - Extremis
Fell
Nextwave
Come In Alone
The Authority
Planetary
Global Frequency

and some really good stuff 2nd tier favorites:

Hellraiser
Anna Mercury
Gravel
etc...
Astonishing X-Men

Transmet, sure is an awesome book. Anna Mercury yeah I got that one, Iron Man dug it. I will eventually reread Fell but after thinking of it I think the story was good but maybe just the art didn't do it for me. Anybody read Ignition City at all yet?

Did you like Global Frequency? I see it in 50 cent bins a lot. I've been thinking about picking it up if it's good.

I've never read Global Frequency, but I love the following by Ellis:

LOVED IT!!
The Authority
Black Summer
Fell
FreakAngels
Gravel (including the Strange/Stranger Kiss & Strange Killings stuff....)
Ignition City
Transmetropolitan
Stormwatch
Wolfskin

2nd tier (for me):
Anna Mercury
Doktor Sleepless
No Hero

*Meh* (Guess I'm not too enthused about his Marvel stuff)
Astonishing X-Men: Ghost Boxes
NextWave
Thunderbolts

Global Frequency was a good series and one I'd certainly recommend, particularly out of a 50 cent bin.

Transmetropolitan is the only comic book that ever had a moment that evoked sheer terror and fear in me.

For that alone, it's one of my favorite series and cements Ellis as a writer who, while I don't collect religiously, I certainly respect.

So I just finished this title and I must say Story great loved it surprising ending and all. Just a really edgy tale of humanity for me. The art not so much. Detail work was spot on but the backgrounds and some of the up close stuff didn't do it for me it was like which is the robot and which is the building? Also the one and only thing about storyline is that we never learn what the stuff Zoe goes into when she first enters the Archangel Suit so to speak. It looks like a miasma of fluid but it's never explained as to what it is. Sure that motivates imagination but I think that could have been included in the underlying story or plot. Maybe it was a dream sea or what have you. :o
