Previews Spotlight #006 (April) and teleconference

Post by BobBretall »

April Previews hits stores today (Wed March 26th) so our next call will be (as tradition dictates) a week from Friday.

April Previews call will be on Friday Apr 4th at 5pm Pacific, 7pm Central and 8pm Eastern.

Submissions for Previews Spotlight #006 should be in by the end of Saturday Apr 6th. Of course you can start sending in submissions as soon as you have them done. Sending them in early is appreciated as it gives Bob and John a bit more time to plan out the episode.

Record a short blurb letting people know why they should pick up a book your interested in. What makes that book cool! What about it caught your eye!

You can get Audacity for free and use it to record an MP3 if you have a microphone for your PC: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If you'd like to "call dibs" on reviewing a particular book/item from the April Previews, please post it to this thread.......

Maybe. But I'm more likely to put down money on his flaming motorcycle being a Super Skrull.

This is the other theory I had over in the Kyptographik Forum
I do think that Aaron is doing so much better than Way was but it still grinds at my soul that he's apparently an angel now... I do think that Marvel needs to get out of it some how and I can see it being one of 2 ways...

1. He's going to find out he's been conned and he's not an angel after all
2. It's Magic and he's back to normal without an explanation which I think that no one would complain about like they did with OMD

All I want to know is Way going to have a dunking booth for what he has done to GR and on Wolverine Origins?

I'd take a BB gun to shoot him with!

Ghost Rider has always been one of my least favorite Marvel characters. I would say that, conservatively, I've bought 95% of everything Marvel releases related to the 616 universe for 25 years and Ghost Rider is one of the exceptions. Just a completely uninteresting character from start to finish.

Overall, I agree with you. Right now, Ghost Rider and Moon Knight are about the only things in the mainstream Marvel Universe that I'm not getting.

I kind of liked the Danny Ketch version in the 1990s. But I suppose some of that was just in comparison to everything else being published at the time.

Hey Guys,

I was thrilled to see the episode in my RSS feed this morning. I have just begun listening but, I thought I would share my thoughts regarding the interviews you started with.

1) In general, I think it's a welcome concept and it's nice to know that you're getting enough notoriety that interviewing creators is a reality.

2) In the future, I would probably rather [depending on how hard it would be to edit] hear these interviews when we get to that spot in Previews. In other words, toward the end of the episode as you're into the 300s, post those interview; kind of like how you segment listener commentary via page order.

3) Considering how many comics you both have read in your lifetimes, that was some heady praise for Kaliber and Hercules indeed! I was already onboard to try them both b/c the price can't be beat, but to hear Bob say this is some of the best comic book art he's ever seen was heady stuff indeed.

4) Through no fault of your own, I could've done without hearing from Radical. It's not that he didn't do a good job or that I'm not intrigued by those books; it's just that he's been pounding the podcast circuit HARDCORE and this was the 4th time I've heard him interviewed in the last few weeks. :)

Keep up the great work. Hopefully I can get a few contributions to the cause next month.

1) Yeah, people do seem to be noticing our humble little show. I was pleasantly surprised by the pull quote on the Justice For Hire ad in Previews this month.

2) Putting the interviews in the flow of the episode would take a little more work but is possible. My only concern with doing that is if it would break up the flow of the episode or not given the length of the interviews.

3) The art in the Radical books is really amazing. I don't think you'll be disappointed in the quality.

4) Yeah, I'm not sure what to do about that. I don't want to pass up opportunities like that just because they are hitting the podcast circuit heavily but I totally see and understand your point.

And please send in contributions. Part of what makes these episodes so fun is the input from other people.

Yeah, I will agree with Wood. I think that either having interviews at the point of the Preview, or even just spreading them out would be good. I pretty much zoned out on the Femme Noir guy and that is a book I was actually interested in. I liked last month, I think, when the fellow from the Runners comic did his plug, it perked up my ears quite a bit.

And Wood, I would be more than happy if I heard both you and Tiki and all sorts of other folks contribute. Even if the show ran for a really long time it would be spotlighting something that caught their eye, and maybe they have background or reasons that some of us didn't take into account.

I think podcasts like this are essential. I mean yes, it might only be so to someone who has been reading comics for awhile, but I know it was this podcast that even got me thinking I would find Previews useful at all. It is such a daunting catalog.

I hope this segment of Comic Book Page continues to grow, as it really does get people finding better comics.

As I say, I haven't listened to the entire episode yet so excuse me if these were covered, but here are a handful of things I WOULD HAVE contributed if bronchitis didn't whoop my (bleep) last week.

1) Red Mass for Mars #1 by Jon Hickman

Hickman is my favorite "new" writer in the business. Nightly News was profound, Pax Romana has been wildly entertaining and the first issue of Transhuman did not disappoint. Red Mass was solicited awhile back and pulled b/c of lack of interest. They resolicited with preview pages this time out and I, for one, am giddy about it.

2) DMZ TPB #5 and Dynamo 5 TPB #2

I'm reading both of these series in trade but only b/c I started late to the party on both and I hate to mix runs by medium. Both are fantastic and Cameron is offering both for 40% off. DMZ is Brian Wood's best work (by far) and Dynamo 5 is Jay Faerber's breakout book; if you like Invincible, I can't see how you wouldn't love Dynamo 5.

3) Eternals #1

Eternals are a cool Kirby creation that has been underused in recent years by Marvel. They're effectively Marvel's answer to the New Gods. They are human-like creations of the Celestials and have god-like powers. Written by the Knaufs and illustrated by Daniel Acuna, I have high hopes for this one.

4) Skaar Son of Hulk #1

Skaar SHOULD be what WWH wasn't. It should continue on the story of the rich world of Sakaar where Greg Pak crafted the best Hulk story of the last 25 years.

5) Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Premier Hardcover 3

I'm giddy about this one folks. I have the first volume sitting on my desk right now and it's fantastic. It's tightly bound, compact, and chock full of up-to-the-minute entries on the Marvel characters, places and times.
