Because of both Chris, I am now considering getting this HC when it comes out. I probably won't pre-order the book because I want to wait and see the reviews on the first DC Library book (not in content but quality of the paper and extra bonus).BobBretall wrote:After listening to Ep #199 of Chris Marshall's Collected Comics Library, and upon the recommendation of Chris Johnson in our own Previews episode, I am adding the following to my December list:
DC LIBRARY: BATMAN THE ANNUALS HC
What's on your December Order (for books shipping in Feb)?

Let us know what you think of this when you get this & read it. I just finished reading the mini today (issues #2-4 on a car trip) and it was really good. I laughed out loud several times at the dialogue the Helm was throwing down at his human wearer...... good stuff.spid wrote:Here is my order for the month. Air is good and #7 was $1 with a 75% discount so you can't go wrong with that. It is a very different kind of book than everything else that I read and in a good way. But, since it is disconnected from everything else, it makes it any easy book to cut if I need to drop some more titles. As much as I'm enjoying the title, there are a number of other titles I'm enjoying more.ctowner1 wrote:Sorry to hear about the job situation, John. You bring up a good point about what makes Air so unique. It is the mystery aspect of the story than I find refreshing and compelling. There is stuff to speculate about and a steady sense of forward movement and progress in the story. While I have no real idea where it is going, I do sense that it is going somewhere and the writer knows where that is.BobBretall wrote:Re: Air....

Well, you CAN go wrong for a $1 if it stinks and it costs you 10-20 minutes of your life that you will never get back, right? OK, it's different in a good way. How so? I read the first issue, and it just didn't ring true to me in terms of dialogue and people's actions. Also, I thought the art was NOT very good - it reminded me not so hot Pat Broderick work.
What is it about this book that you like? Has the art gotten better (or did you like it from the start)?

What kind of a mystery? Is this series grounded in straight reality? Or is it metaphysical in nature? Are we talking "Lost" kind of mystery? Or Sam Spade kind of mystery? Is it straight action/suspence? Or more played for laughs. Satirical? Philsophical? Or what?BobBretall wrote:Re: Air....

I confess that the details from reading issues #1 have faded (another reason I'm hesitant to leap on board with that trade).

The comparison to Pat Broderick art is a good one. And I can see how you might not like it. Personally, I don't love it but it works for the story. I probably would not be happy with this artist on a mainstream super-hero title. But this isn't a mainstream super-hero title. Far from it and that is a lot of what I'm enjoying about it. It sort of reads like a quirky adventure drama on television.ctowner1 wrote:Well, you CAN go wrong for a $1 if it stinks and it costs you 10-20 minutes of your life that you will never get back, right? I think that the first issue is a good enough representation of the series that if you read the first issue and didn't care for it, maybe it isn't the right sort of title for you. And there is nothing wrong with that at all. Not all comics work for all people.
For me, it is a fun read but not an essential read. I'm liking what I'm reading but would drop this title before things like Echo, Sword or PS238.
Lost-ish in nature but not in specifics. There is a metaphysical aspect tot he series. It is more adventure than either action or suspense. It is generally played straight with some humor to it. It is more a "who is this guy" kind of mystery than a typical "who done it" kind of mystery.ctowner1 wrote:What kind of a mystery? Is this series grounded in straight reality? I'd suggest re-reading the first issue. If it leaves you cold, skip the trade.

cool...thanks for the info. Initially, I put it on my "to order" list - b/c $5 for a 5 or 6 issue trade is a pretty decent price. But then I thought perhaps it's not such a great idea to buy things reflexively based solely on bang for the buck. And haven't heard anything that is really drawing me in here, so I will most likely skip it.JohnMayo wrote:Lost-ish in nature but not in specifics. There is a metaphysical aspect tot he series.
