Amazing Spider-Man #700, 1:700 variant

Post by abysslord »

Mr Garcin Collage Standard Cover
Marcos Martin ASM 50th Anniversary Cover (Exceed orders of #691)
Olivier Coipel Cover (Exceed 150% orders of #691)
Marcos Martin Cover (Exceed 175% orders of #691)
Humberto Ramos Wraparound Cover (Exceed 200% orders of #691)
Steve Ditko 1:200 Cover
Joe Quesada 1:700 Cover

Looks like DCBS had the order up for the last two, the 1:700 was $350. however, they sent a reply to someone who ordered it:

"As of right now, it looks like only the first 3 people will be able to receive the variant. You are #6 in line. We will know for sure at the end of the month. If you would like to cancel the item before then please let us know and we can do that for you. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Sure it's ridiculous, but I think it would be cool to own that because there can't be too many out there.

Can anyone guess what your average LCS orders for a title like ASM? I have no idea, but I can imagine even 200 could be a lot.

I suspect they are going to make more of the 1:700 than there are shops that will order >700 copies.

I'd guess maybe 20-30 shops will order that many?

I'd suspect they'll make at least 100 if not 200.

but $350? That's crazy. For that kind of money you could get a VG copy of a Spider-Man comic from 1963.

the standard issue is listed at $7.99. so if we guess that retailers buy it at 35% of cover price ($2.79) thats a near $2000 outlay to get 1 cover.

the thing that worries me. how many shops plump for this rather than shelf copies of mid - low selling titles?

Ok, so apparently this isn't true anymore. Diamond has said they had a typo and the 1:700 is actually 1:100, and 1:750 is actually 1:150. That's a long time to correct a typo, isn't it?

This whole situation seems a little strange.

The email a seller got from Diamond:
OCT120632 D AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700 QUESADA VAR-

The following has changed for this variant so please adjust your orders according

YOU MAY ORDER 1 VARIANT FOR EVERY 700 REGULAR YOU PURCHASE.) -

*THE RATIO HAS BEEN CHANGED TO 1 FOR 100 PER MARVEL.-

*(NOTE: THE RATIO HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM 1 FOR 700 TO THE
FOLLOWING: YOU MAY ORDER 1 VARIANT FOR EVERY 100 REGULAR EDITION THAT YOU PURCHASE.)
Has this happened before? I guess it's not a big deal since dealers can still change their orders, but still.

Was it a "typo" or was it "Gee, hardly any shops are jacking up their orders to get the 1:700, maybe we'd better notch that down a bit"

well, at least they tried. 'hey, i know how we can get sales to over 1m -- 1:700 variant!!'

'excellent idea!'

'hey boss, we printed all these 1:700 variants, but nobody is buying them'

'change it to 100 then! good job everybody'
