Thief of Thieves speculation

Post by abysslord »

Well, this is pretty interesting to me. Thief of Thieves #1-3 [yes, even #3 which just came out] are selling like crazy on Ebay. We're talking $101 for a set of all 3:

I would say to take advantage of this and just buy them back years later at a normal price, but that still hasn't happened for Walking Dead, which keeps going up. Hell, even the last arc of TWD is going for crazy money.

Yep, I see a bunch of speculators asking for them and people selling #1 in packs of 5 and 10. I'll probably hold mine another year or two. If the tv show goes, it won't come down to regular levels for a while and will only go up. It could go to $200 or so if the show gets picked up.

If you bought it for cover or less, shouldn't be a big deal to hold it.

Interestingly, I don't think there was much a spike in demand for Powers when that went to production (now being scrapped and redone).

Kirkman tied to ToT is the catalyst.

Probably the subject matter too. Isn't "Powers" about superheroes on some level? Superhero shows, in general, don't do well or don't last long.

But yeah, in this case it's the Kirkman factor. Hell, the comic reads like a TV show already.

Bah! I passed by stacks of these at Image Expo.

I should have bought a bunch of them.

#1 sold out within an hour at my local shop in London. I managed to get a second printing copy, but I guess it isn't worth as much as a mint 1st printing.

Those are probably the same editions I saw at ECCC. They aren't first prints.

I predict that holding onto these for a significant length of time would be a mistake. These comics are skyrocketing purely because The Walking Dead did, and I don't think they'll hold a fraction of that momentum or value. Sell them and sell them now.

I agree. It's weird how this speculation is based not even on the book itself, but rather what happened with a different book. Very strange situation. At least Walking Dead had a lot of back issues to build up readership and then got really hot.

I think the prices will hold for only a little longer, but you never know. I said the same thing about Walking Dead 2 years ago, now it's still going up.

How I wish I had gone to the shop that Wednesday and bought a stack. #1 is going for £40 or more on eBay, #1-3 are going for £125. A graded 9.8 #1 just sold for £650!

I think the speculation is based on a bunch of things:

1. How WD is doing
2. The success of the WD show on AMC
3. Kirkmania
4. That ToT was optioned for television

People are trying to get ahead of the game if they can and a $10 bet against potential upside of $1k is pretty easy, even if you lose.

That being said, I don't chase books like this bec I don't have time, energy, or storage. If T0T were 30 or so issues in and the series was picked up, this would be a no brainer. By that point it will be a $100-$200 book though.

I managed to find a copy of issues 1 and 2, first prints, for cover price last weekend. I was pretty pleased.

They aren't NM/M, so it's not really worth it. The copies I found are VF/NM to NM, tops.

I'll still probably flip 'em on the bay for some profit.
