Great idea for a thread, Bob. I just put my house on a second mortgage (no not really!) to get one of those new iPad thingys! (It's a tax writeoff - because THIS Phoenix Con I can take credit card payments with that Square attachment!)
So last night I paid my first official cash money (okay, iTunes credit) for a comic book - Demon Knights #7. This is far and away my favorite book of the New 52, and I'd been picking it up in single issue format from my LCS. I feel sorry for that owner, because this book looked so. damn. good. on my iPad that I may stick to picking it up this way from here on out (and double-dipping to get the trade when it comes out).
Do I miss paper? Kinda, but the colors and inkwork pretty much burst out of the "page" on this one (it's a very-action oriented issue in a very action-oriented series). I don't know if the retina display has anything to do with it but color me hooked.

Price is definitely a factor. I winced at paying $2.99 + tax for Demon Knights but it turned out to be worthwhile, and I tried to consider the "mental factor" with the purchase (I want this book to keep going, I better buy it to 'vote with my dollars').
It'd be much easier if they were a buck apiece though...that's for sure.

I bought my first Digital comics this week.......
1st:
Marvel had a "sale" where if you bought select Avengers comics on your mobile device (google Android/iPhone only)you'd get a coupon good for $5 off on Marvel comics bought at the LCS. Sounded like a deal, though I'm unsure of the logic of shutting out people who want to read comics on their computer or who have a non-google mobile device.
Anyway, I bought Avengers #4 (1st Captain America) which I thought was a great classic comic worth having to look at for $1.99 and I should get a $5 coupon next week, so this was essentially a digital comic they are paying me $3 to buy.
2nd:
DC is having a April Fool's 99-cent sale on comics featuring the Joker.....
I got the classic "Laughing Fish" story from Detective Comics #475 & 476 for 99 cents each. Classic stuff by Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers & Terry Austin.
I think I'm much more comfortable buying older "classics" I know are good and will re-read a number of times for a cheap price than paying $2.99 for new books that I may or may not like and which tend to have less story content & re-readability.

This seems like a good strategy to me too. I tend to troll for books on sale and generally avoid full price on digital.BobBretall wrote: I think I'm much more comfortable buying older "classics" I know are good and will re-read a number of times for a cheap price than paying $2.99 for new books that I may or may not like and which tend to have less story content & re-readability.
I was going to give the whole Avengers vs X-Men event a miss, but might give it a try after reading AvX #0. It's a decent issue, but has me intrigued enough to see what comes next. The $5 coupon certainly helps
After dropping a bunch of Marvel titles, this digital comic thing might pull me back in. Comics look amazing on the new iPad. I wasn't that impressed with how they were on the iPad 1. The printed page had much more clarity in comparison. On this new one everything is very sharp and the pages really pop, moreso than on paper.
I've been pre-ordering the DC Combo packs (with digital codes) and even those appear to be getting HD upgrades. It's good to see Marvel getting into the game in a big way with the digital copies included with their $3.99 books. I'd consider going straight digital if the new releases weren't so expensive! At this point it's cheaper to pre-order via DCBS than download.
Any other issues in that Joker sale look good? I'm trying out the issues Bob mentioned, but would like to pick up some other classics in the list too, if they're any good.

That's an interesting strategy, and one that makes a lot of sense.BobBretall wrote:I think I'm much more comfortable buying older "classics" I know are good and will re-read a number of times for a cheap price than paying $2.99 for new books that I may or may not like and which tend to have less story content & re-readability.
There was a Legion 99-cent sale a week ago, and I picked up the great darkness saga, and a couple early Legion issues (1st legion appearance, 1st Jim Shooter legion)
In general, I tend to buy digital when it is on sale. 99 cents is a no brainer, and I'll buy anything I'm remotely interested in at that price. For $1.99, it has to be something I know I'll like.
My $2.99 and above purchases are few and far between.

Detective #826 - Robin "taken for a ride" by Joker story by Paul Dini
I just bought 2 more:
Batman #251 - Joker's 5-way revenge by Denny O'Neil & Neal Adams
(this one has what I consider to be the most classic Neal Adams Batman page of all time)
Batman: The Man Who Laughs - 66 page comic by Ed Brubaker & Doug Mahnke

This is why a whole section of my store is devoted to 99 cent issuesAndrewN wrote:These 99c sales are dangerous!

I love the 99 cents sales.
A couple of weeks ago, I got a whole bunch of Legion stories that I never read, including EarthWar.
With the Joker sale, I got some books that I already have but couldn't resist double (or in some cases triple) dipping.
What's nice thing about digital comics is that if you are traveling, it is easy to just a read a book or two if you have some extra time. We went to NYC to visit my sister-in-law this weekend and I read the couple issues of Legion when I was waiting for everyone to get ready on my iPad.

I just read the A v. X Infinity Nova comic.
Wow. This thing is really cool. If you've got a device with Comixology on it, I HIGHLY recommend this, if for nothing else, for the experience of how the story is told. This thing is really great.
It's only 99 cents, and the storytelling is fantastic. It's well worth it.
The story itself is decompressed as can be, and could probably be told in 2 or 3 pages, but this "Infinite" presentation made me appreciate this book in a way that I don't think I would have if I were reading a print version.
