This is a fun convention that I enjoy every year. It's a LOT smaller than San Diego, which is why I enjoy it as much as I do, since I still get to meet a lot of very nice creators without having to deal with the insane crowds of SDCC.

Looking forward to meeting Stan Sakai this year, as I just discovered Usagi Yojimbo recently.

Also, anyone coming to Long Beach, please swing by the Hero Initiative booth and become a member for next year. We'll probably be giving a few things away if you do

Panels:
* The Guild - Season 5 Highlights
* Stan Sakai - Making Comics A to Z - fascinating panel as Stan sketched thumbnails, told stories, and walked us through the 5 week production process for an issue of Usagi Yojimbo.
* Aspen Comics panel - I'm particularly looking forward to the ongoing Executive Assistants series coming in July, the new series Idolized (you can vote on costume designs for this series here: http://www.facebook.com/IdolizedComic?ref=ts ), and also the return of Shrugged! I also got a couple of limited con cover comics for asking questions at the panel (Exec Assistant Violet #1 &Broken Pieces #1). Another cool thing is they gave everyone at the panel a coupon to redeem for a print at their booth, I got a REALLY nice Executive Assistant Iris print by Billy Tan & Peter Steigerwald, autographed by both & limited to 150.
* Thomas Jane - A Career on the Edge - If you ever get a chance to hear Tom Jane talk at a con, do it! He's full of energy & fascinating. He told us about breaking into acting from running away from home in suburban Maryland @ 15 1/2 (he made it as far as Flagstaff before the cops picked him up) to his co-starring role in a Bollywood movie (he turned 17 in India) and he ended up with his 1st Hollywood speaking part in Joss Whedon's Buffy movie.

Bought Sketches:
* Power Girl by Amanda Conner, full color on canvas paper.
* Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai - I finally got a proper full commission after 15 years of getting free sketches inside TPBs

* Giant-Size Elephantmen with fold-out Triptych cover by J. Scott Campbell (autographed by Richard Starkings)
* The Monstrous Collection Oversized HC - beautiful B&W Absolute sized HC by Steve Niles & Bernie Wrightson collecting their series Dead, She Said - The Ghoul - Doc Macabre. Autographed by both Steve & Bernie, it's REALLY nice to see Bernie's art reproduced at the large size in B&W not obscured by color.
* Mark Beachum sketchbook "Supergirls" - reproducing sketches he's sold on eBay over the past few years of super female characters.

How did you nab the Amanda conner? Did you set it up at sdcc or was it something she had with her? Cost?

It was a new technique she was experimenting with & had brought with her.

She was doing "while you wait" con sketches for $150, I had resolved to get a couple of really nice things this con instead of 5x cool but less expensive things and Amanda & Stan Sakai were on my list.

I was waiting in line for her & as she was doing the sketch for the guy in front of me, I decided to get that sketch she had brought with for $300 instead of the con sketch for $150.

BTW, what's REALLY nice when you look at it closely is the texture, because it's on a canvased textured surface & looks like a painting.
