I'm thinking about going, just as a nice trip out of Vegas for the weekend.

This is a fun convention that I enjoy every year. It's a LOT smaller than San Diego, which is why I enjoy it as much as I do, since I still get to meet a lot of very nice creators without having to deal with the insane crowds of SDCC.

Looking forward to meeting Stan Sakai this year, as I just discovered Usagi Yojimbo recently.

Also, anyone coming to Long Beach, please swing by the Hero Initiative booth and become a member for next year. We'll probably be giving a few things away if you do :wink:

Saturday Run-down

Panels:
* The Guild - Season 5 Highlights
* Stan Sakai - Making Comics A to Z - fascinating panel as Stan sketched thumbnails, told stories, and walked us through the 5 week production process for an issue of Usagi Yojimbo.
* Aspen Comics panel - I'm particularly looking forward to the ongoing Executive Assistants series coming in July, the new series Idolized (you can vote on costume designs for this series here: http://www.facebook.com/IdolizedComic?ref=ts ), and also the return of Shrugged! I also got a couple of limited con cover comics for asking questions at the panel (Exec Assistant Violet #1 &Broken Pieces #1). Another cool thing is they gave everyone at the panel a coupon to redeem for a print at their booth, I got a REALLY nice Executive Assistant Iris print by Billy Tan & Peter Steigerwald, autographed by both & limited to 150.
* Thomas Jane - A Career on the Edge - If you ever get a chance to hear Tom Jane talk at a con, do it! He's full of energy & fascinating. He told us about breaking into acting from running away from home in suburban Maryland @ 15 1/2 (he made it as far as Flagstaff before the cops picked him up) to his co-starring role in a Bollywood movie (he turned 17 in India) and he ended up with his 1st Hollywood speaking part in Joss Whedon's Buffy movie.

Bought Sketches:
* Power Girl by Amanda Conner, full color on canvas paper.
* Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai - I finally got a proper full commission after 15 years of getting free sketches inside TPBs

Other purchases:
* Giant-Size Elephantmen with fold-out Triptych cover by J. Scott Campbell (autographed by Richard Starkings)
* The Monstrous Collection Oversized HC - beautiful B&W Absolute sized HC by Steve Niles & Bernie Wrightson collecting their series Dead, She Said - The Ghoul - Doc Macabre. Autographed by both Steve & Bernie, it's REALLY nice to see Bernie's art reproduced at the large size in B&W not obscured by color.
* Mark Beachum sketchbook "Supergirls" - reproducing sketches he's sold on eBay over the past few years of super female characters.

Image

Autographs:
* Bob Layton on Demon in a Bottle & Doomquest HCs
* Jimmy Palmiotti on All-Star Western #1
* Josh Fialkov on I, Vampire #1 & Last of the Greats #1
* Scott Lobdell on Red Hood #1&2
* Scott Lobdell/Norm Rapmund on Teen Titans #1
* Steve Niles on Wulf #1, 2, 3
* Tom Hutchinson/Nei Ruffino on the Nei variant cover of Critter #1

Good conversations with:
Bernie Wrightson, Chris & Shane Houghton, Jimmy Palmiotti, Josh Fialkov, Mark Beachum, Richard Starkings, Stan Sakai, Steve Niles, Thom Zahler, Vince Hernandez

Wonderful lunch with Mr & Mrs LARabbit (Andy & Lisa), dinner with Andy & Lisa and Joe Davidson (ynesid4disney)

PS: Thanks Andy & Lisa for sending your extra LBCC Hulk #1 exclusive cover my way!!

How did you nab the Amanda conner? Did you set it up at sdcc or was it something she had with her? Cost?

It was a new technique she was experimenting with & had brought with her.

She was doing "while you wait" con sketches for $150, I had resolved to get a couple of really nice things this con instead of 5x cool but less expensive things and Amanda & Stan Sakai were on my list.

I was waiting in line for her & as she was doing the sketch for the guy in front of me, I decided to get that sketch she had brought with for $300 instead of the con sketch for $150.

BTW, what's REALLY nice when you look at it closely is the texture, because it's on a canvased textured surface & looks like a painting.

Sunday Run-down

Panels:
* Tim Bradstreet - A Quarter Century of Illustration - From his beginnings doing gaming illustration for White Wolf & FASA, his early breaks with Tim Truman to his iconic Hellblazer & Punisher coverwork, this was a great intimate chat with Tim, moderated by his pal Tom Jane.

Bought Sketches:
* Sherlock Holmes & Moriarty by Anthony Diecidue
* Reed Gunther, Sterling & Starla by Chris Houghton

Other purchases:
* Set of 4 prints from the Hero Initiative
-- Howard the Duck & Bev by Frank Cho (autographed)
-- Immortal Iron Fist by Dan Brereton (autographed)
-- Grendel & Strangers in Paradise by Matt Wagner & Terry Moore (autographed)
-- Batwoman by JH Williams III
* Archetype: The art of Tim Bradstreet - autographed by Tim & Tom Jane
* Jamie Tyndall sketchbook - This guy's art is kind of a cross between J. Scott Campbell & Michael Turner
* I got 3 Parker free mini-prints autographed by Darwyn Cooke at his signing at the IDW booth
* I also picked up some back issue comics today. Some classic Silver Age stuff + some weird indie stuff that one vendor had that is VERY hard to find.

Autographs:
* Darwyn Cooke on The Outfit HC & the Parker RI Sketchbook
* Tom Hutchinson/Todd Nauck on the Nauck covers of Critter #1 & 2
* Vince Hernandez on Charismagic #1

(I learned from Scott that there are 10+ more Artists Editions in the works, one of them is Amazing Spider-Man by Gil Kane!)

Good lunch w/LARabbit @ CPK
