New 52 Thoughts

Post by Trev »

Just finished the latest week of books. There's a couple you guys haven't done that I have: Supergirl and Nightwing. Did I miss them somewhere? [edit: just realized I also read week 3 -- nevermind. Vacation meant I built up 2 weeks of unread.]

I have to say that suprisingly my favorite books are the Batman Family (-Batwing), the Superman Family, and the DCU Dark Stuff -- esp. Demon Knights -- loved loved loved that book.

Last set of books coming next week and we'll see.

Books I was really into prior to the relaunch, GL Family, JLI, and LoSH I am more lukewarm on now. I will probably stop getting GL and maybe just one of the LoSH titles, but we'll see.

Biggest disappointment was probably Captain Atom. Didn't like the art and miss the time travel aspect of the character.

Of the 35 or so I've read so far, I think there are maybe 10-12 that are definite buys. That's maybe a 25-30% increase over what I was buying before. Still more titles to come though . . .

I only read Batman and Detective basically before the new 52. From reading the solicits I planned on 40 I think, a lot of them sounded interesting to me and I've always wanted to try titles like Wonder Woman or Flash. After reading almost all 52 [the only ones left are ones I know I'm going to like], it looks like I'll be getting 43, pretty close to my pre-read estimate.

In general I feel every book was done at least competently, although Hawk & Dove and Captain Atom stand out as not very good for art and story. But O.M.A.C surprised me, along with Savage Hawkman and Blue Beetle. Who knows, after a few more issues I may drop those but so far I'm interested. The one that stood out on top for me was Batman. Resurrection man was really cool too.

The ones that didn't make it for me after one issue were:

Hawk & Dove:
Hated the art, story seemed cliche, Hawk's costume is laughable and both costumes are horrible aged ... or drawn, either one.

Men Of War and Blackhawks:
Not a big fan of these type of stories, I'd read G.I. Joe for a war fix.

Static Shock:
Seemed aimed a lower age group, too cartoony.

Captain Atom:
Very thin premise/story, powers seem kinda boring. Art was a little weak.

Mister Terrific:
Maybe the dumbest title ever, story was okay but I just don't care enough to keep reading. Art seemed inconsistent.

Green Arrow:
Pretty good first issue, I just don't care about a bow and arrow hero. Every arrow does something cool, I got it all in one issue.

Voodoo:
Not a bad story, but I don't care about an alien running from the government story.

Firestorm:
I don't want to read about two teenagers arguing about their race or not getting along. I have a feeling that's going to happen a lot.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the relaunch and even though some of the titles were horrible for a brand new reader to comics [like the Legion books], I think if you already read comics you'd know you don't get answers right away and need to just keep reading to figure things out.

I hope DC gives these titles some room to breathe and catch new readers, I mean at least give them a year.

I was looking at next weeks batch of #2's.

I'll be getting:-

Animal Man #2 - Felt very grounded and liked the twist
Static Shock #2 - Loved the old school feel
Omac #2 - A complete trip of out there ideas - loved it
Stormwatch #2 - on my standing order - I'm just a wildstorm whore.

Titles I read issue #1 of and won't be getting #2

Swamp Thing - Didn't click at all with me.
Men of War - I don't think it showed enough of itself in issue #1

I'm considering Penguin as I loved Gregg Hurwitz Vegeance of the Moon Knight run.

I'm considering Huntress as it establishes her before her upcoming Birds of Prey appearance (and I loved BoP #1)

Today will be the first test for me about what I really want to keep up with. I'm going to try and stay with my old 3-5 books a week method of buying. will be interesting to see what really sticks. I think there are roughly 10-15 of the new 52 that I definitely will not continue with and maybe another 8-10 that I am fully sold on.

What breaks through from that middle tier, I'm not sure yet. Largely it will depend on what else is competing for dollars the weeks they come out.

I just knew that the end of September would see a drop in the numder of titles I get. Still I found myself pulling 12 books today. Ready to get some clarity on what I want to keep. My wallet is screaming for mercy!

For everyone that thought the ending to Detective #1 was intense, wait until you check out the cliffhanger ending for #2.

Firstly, love the prominence of the text of the covers of the issue 2's. I hope they keep it. There's been too many 'poster' covers around recently

OMAC #2 - not quite as intense as the first issue, but I still a nice rip roaring ride. There was nice layering of Cadmus / Checkmate and a nice placement of Kho as reluctant host.

Static Shock #2 - I don't think I ever recall an vocal impersonation of a film character in a comic book, but there's always a first. I love the villain designs in this book, they're ripe for the articulated action figure market. The mystery of Static's Sister(s) is expanded upon but it does feel like one specific page is pure Rozum in contrast to the 'collaboration' for the rest of the issue.

will read Animal Man #2 and JLI 1 & 2 (just felt the urge to buy it) later.

JLI and Action were good, I'll keep getting those.

Swamp Thing? Pass now. It's clear Animal Man and Swamp Thing go together. I won't be getting either. Just not enough interesting there.

Detective -- fence sitting now. Might pick up the 3rd issue, but depends on what else is out there. I have a feeling Batman and Robin, Batman, Nightwing, and Batgirl will be my Bat Books of choice.

I liked Action #2 a LOT more than I liked issue #1....BUT.... What's the deal with 20 pages of story for $3.99.......

Does DC think throwing in a bunch of interview material with Morrison/Morales that I can read on the internet and a preview of a Batman OGN is worth an extra $1?

They need to "hold the line at $2.99" on Action Comics if they are only going to be giving us 20 pages of story content.
