I guess DC is my top publisher now, although some may only last a few more issues. Green (36) means I'm keeping it, Orange (7) means I'll give it a few more issues at least, Red (9) is dead.
Since I listed all 52 I kept comments short. It seems almost every issue followed the same formula of giving you a little and ending with a cliffhanger .. so a lot of stories were thin.
Action Comics- Pretty good, still think jeans/boots are weird.
All-Star Western- Very surprised how much I liked this, very cool story and the art/coloring was great.
Animal Man- I didn't mind the art as much as others, the colors were bad though. Story was interesting, another surprise for me.
Aquaman- Good setup.
Batgirl- I like the Mirror so far, I liked the art too.
Batman- 5/5. Every Synder book I don't want to end.
Batman and Robin- Robin was a little over the top but I liked the villain, art was just okay.
Batwing- Art was great, backgrounds were boring, I'll keep reading for a few more at least.
Batwoman- Nothing unexpected, great art/story....although is she an albino?
Birds of Prey- I don't mind slow setups for a team.
Blackhawks- Didn't seem bad, good ending, but I don't care for human solider stories, I'd read G.I. Joe.
Blue Beetle- Didn't get enough in one issue to judge, so I'll read some more. So far it's cool.
Captain Atom- Hardly remember it.
Catwoman- I liked it a lot, I think the big deal about the ending was ridiculous .... it's the 21st century people.
DC Comics Presents- Not enough in one issue, but since this changes every 5 issues ... I'll at least get it to the 2nd story.
Deathstroke- Loved it, great ending.
Demon Knights- I'm a huge fantasy novel reader, but even I thought this danced around too much. But, I still liked it.
Firestorm- Racial bickering, nah.
Flash- Cool ending, I liked the art/story.
Frankenstein- Surprised me how much I liked this, almost made me think of Monster Squad. I can see this getting too silly though, so we'll see.
Green Arrow- One issue was enough, each arrow does something cool. Got it.
Green Lantern- Good setup.
Green Lantern Corps- Cool story.
Green Lantern: New Guardians- Cooler story.
Grifter- I like these type of stories.
Hawk & Dove- [censored]
I, Vampire- I think the cover hurt this comic, they look glittery and Twilight-ish. The book is great though, loved the art and story.
Justice League- Good setup, don't mind team books starting slow.
Justice League International- Good setup.
Justice League Dark- I like horror stories, this seems close.
Legion Lost- Little confusing but I'll stick with it for awhile.
Legion of Super-Heroes- More confusing but I'll stick with it for awhile.
Men of War- see Blackhawks review.
Mister Terrific- Dumb title, art inconsistent, not interested enough.
Nightwing- Loved it.
O.M.A.C.- Surprised me, reminded me of Xombi but not as goofy for the sake of being goofy.
Red Hood & the Outlaws- Again with the controversy ... big f'n deal. I like the setup and story so far.
Red Lanterns- I like the angle, art was great.
Resurrection Man- I loved this book, great setup.
Savage Hawkman- I liked the art and it fit the story.
Static Shock- Seems childish and too cartoony for me.
Stormwatch- I'll give it a few more.
Suicide Squad- Loved this book.
Superboy- Pretty cool narration.
Supergirl- Not much happened, but I like it so far.
Superman- Wait ... was this a WHOLE STORY in one issue???? WOW!! I loved everything about this book, really read like a Silver Age comic.
Swamp Thing- Scott Synder, that's enough for me.
Teen Titans- LOVED the art, and again ... slow setup for team books is a good idea [note to Legion writers].
Voodoo- Not bad, but not interested. Plus Marz books are really late lately, maybe because of this book ... but how long could it have taken to write this?
Wonder Woman- Loved it, although I'm not as impressed with the art as others are. Seems blocky.

Sorry......Danscomics wrote:I thought you said you were giving a reason over here (from your over-full comics thread). I'm on the fence about this one, I actually thought the art was really pretty, but the story wasn't my favorite.BobBretall wrote: Captain Atom - Wow! I really disliked this. You called it on this one, Hassan.
For me, I really disliked the art. I've liked Williams in the past, but this evolution of his art was not pleasing to my eye, but it's personal taste since you really like it.
I was also very confused by the story. What were those clocks? What's the deal with that rat? I didn't identify with or even like ANY of the characters in the story, which is a recipe for a dropped book.

Brilliant #1 (Marvel ICON): Typical Bendis I guess, we get a setup which is basically just a bunch of talk between friends, we get a little hint of the premise, and then the book just stops. "See you in 59 days" it says. Maybe not. I'll give it a few more I guess.
After reading Superman #1 with tons of narration/dialogue (which I loved), and seeing people pan that, maybe THAT'S why this decompressed story telling works so well is because there isn't much reading? I always find it funny when someone criticizes a comic book for being wordy. Those pesky words! Think of people who love novels, what masochists!

a bit off topic.... but go and look at this blog post at http://acomicbookblog.com/2011/09/a-com ... ress-rant/ that lists the number of words in various X-Men comics since 1963abysslord wrote:

With creators Pamliotti/Gray/Moritat, I agree that I will be strongly disposed towards liking this.HassanT wrote:I predict that you will like All-Star WesternBobBretall wrote:Hey Hassan!!! Get your predictions in! What Week 4 books am I going to like & dislike?
What about super-hero books, any guesses on how I'll like those?

I think you nailed it. I definitely WILL NOT be back for more Brilliant. This was a very weak #1 in my opinion, there needed to me a lot more "meat" in the set up and less idle chit-chat establishing character relationships that I'll now never read about again since the #1 didn't interest me enough to get me to want to continue with the book. PLUS, with this little story content in an issue, waiting 2 months for the next installment is a bit ridiculous.abysslord wrote:Brilliant #1 (Marvel ICON): Typical Bendis I guess, we get a setup which is basically just a bunch of talk between friends, we get a little hint of the premise, and then the book just stops. I looked at the final two panels for awhile thinking "Maybe there's a clever clue to tantalize you into getting the next issue" but I don't think there is. That may be the strangest ending I've ever read. It panned out and just stopped .... very strange. Even ending on the dialogue "We've created superpowers" or something would have been better.BobBretall wrote:I think you nailed it. I definitely WILL NOT be back for more Brilliant. Oh well, I'm a sucker for punishment, I'll get #2 and see what happens.

If you get it that soon. Brilliant #1 was delayed for at least 2 months (at least that was how long it popped up for Final Order Cutoff every single week). Sounds like it was a good move for me to pass on it.BobBretall wrote:I think you nailed it. I definitely WILL NOT be back for more Brilliant. I'm trying to catch up here. I've been pretty busy, had a weekend business trip out to L.A to visit comic shops, then went back to L.A again for a family Wedding. This may contain Spoilers
Voodoo Even with all the in your face T&A, which normally turns me away from a comic, the story kept me interested. I like how the main character seems to be a villain.
All Star Western Fun jack the ripper in Gotham type of story, ok art. I'm a little disappointed that they strayed away from the "one and done" stories.
SuperboyI originally skipped this title when it first came out, but since it was recommended by so many people here and at the shop I decided to give it a shot. I really liked this A LOT. Superboy engineered as a weapon....WAY COOL!
Teen Titans Action packed story with enough character introduction to help me not feel lost on who was who. It was nice to see a team book where all the team was in the book **coughJuscticeleaguecough* and where the team is being brought together to survive and help each other, than the Govt bringing them together. The art was a little weak, I would like to see Bret Booth not try to be like Jim Lee. I also liked how well it tied into Superboy #1
I, Vampire I agree with abysslord [quote=abysslord] I think the cover hurt this comic, they look glittery and Twilight-ish. The book is great though, loved the art and story.[\quote]
Fury of Firestorm Fun book, but not that fun. Oh, the nerd and jock don't get along, and now they're teamed-up.....meh.
Nightwing good story, but the artist need some help with story telling.
Batman Great book. Great art. Snyder can do no wrong
Red Hood and the Outlaws This book just bad. The story was lame and full of unoriginal material. It seemed to have been written by a 15 year old, and not the person that did a great job on Superboy and Teen Titans.
I'm liking a lot more of the new DC books than I expected or wanted to like

Overall, and except for a few stand outs, week three was pretty so-so.
For me, a GREEN is a book I would continue to buy, ORANGE is a book I would read if it were handed to me, but I’m not interested enough to buy, and RED is a book that I am not interested in at all. A few books are GREERANGE, which means it is too early for me to tell.
Batman – A lot of people loved this book, but it just seemed like a not-bad Batman story, nothing particularly special or spectacular. I can dig a Batman story every now and then, but I’m not the kind of Batman fan for whom “not sucking” is enough to get me to buy it. If this develops and gets better, I might change though. Who knows?
Birds of Prey – I liked the attitude in this book, but there wasn’t enough here to really grab me.
Blue Beetle – Perfectly decent, but not for me. One thing that I noticed is that the writer managed to do a decent job of capturing the rhythm and feel of “barrio spanglesh”. It read as fairly believable to me. Far better than I would expect from typical comic book writing.
Captain Atom – This is a title that even if it was good, wouldn’t be for me. Didn’t think it was that good though.
Catwoman – There is a lot I like about this book, and I don’t mind a sexy, fun Catwoman. Batman and Catwoman’s romance was my favorite part of “Hush” back in the day, and I’m interested in that. This one could go either way for me.
DC Universe Presents – Not enough here to grab me or make me care about Deadman.
Green Lantern Corps – I like the whole green lantern mythos, but didn’t feel really engaged with this issue. I’ve never been much of a Guy Gardner fan either. I liked the previous GLC book when Kyle Rainer was in it, maybe New Guardians will be right for me.
Legion Of Super-Heroes – This gave me slightly less of a headache than Legion Lost from last week, but a headache none the less.
Nightwing – This book made me like and care about Dick/Nightwing far more than I have in the past. When I find myself liking the character, that’s usually a good sign. The only reason it’s not a full green is that, well, it’s Nightwing.
Red Hood and the Outlaws – I’ve liked Red Hood/Jason Todd since he came back, and the cliffhanger actually made me a bit interested. The Starfire thing was a wreck though.
Supergirl – This book gets the super mega decompression award of the year. I had read reviews that criticized this book for only having one scene, but I disregarded those as hyperbole. Until I read it. Supergirl crashes on earth, then fights some guys trying to catch her, then Superman shows up. What writer with half a sense for comic book writing thinks that is enough to stretch out over 20 pages? I’m frustrated with this issue, because I feel like stretching this scene to 20 pages did absolutely nothing for the story that couldn’t have been done if the story in this book were just the first 5 or 6 pages of the story. This book seems to epitomize a lot of what frustrates me about modern comics.
Wonder Woman – This was cool. Just a good, solid Wonder Woman story. I liked it. Most enjoyable book of the week for me.
