I'm not characterizing the art as "bad", just that it does not appeal to me. It has a certain style to it, but one that didn't work for me, personally.abysslord wrote:I agree, though the art isn't bad enough for me to quit. It was very peculiar though, especially close-ups of faces. Compare this to the other Minotaur title and it's no contest.BobBretall wrote: Last Mortal #1 (Image/Top Cow) - I liked the story, but the B&W art by Thomas Nachlick was really not clicking with me on this one.

Godzilla # 1
Absolutely horredous issue. I am a huge Godzilla fan and I absolutely love all the films but this issue didn`t speak to me at all. There is nothing that happens in this issue that makes me want to continue with this series at all. Unfortunately I have also read the second issues and it is also not worth reading. Stay away from this series as barely anything happens in a given issue.

Star Wars Jedi The Dark Side #1 - I passed on this on my DCBS order, but I picked it up off the shelf at my LCS and was pleased. This features the era right before Episode 1 with Qui-Gon Jinn as the star, his new Padawan, and an interesting new female Jedi (always welcome in Star Wars) who accompanies them on a mission. This is mostly set up, but there's some interesting character moments and a good twist at the end. The art, which can be hot and cold in the Star Wars books (I can't get into Invasion because of the art), is really good here. The artist is Mahmud Asrar of Dynamo 5 fame and I think he's done some stuff at Marvel, although I don't think I've seen it. Definitely a fun read for the Star Wars junkies out there.
Strange Adventures #1: Wow. I really loved this book. Especially after being so disappointed with the return of Dark Horse Presents, this book really shines. While there were a couple of stories in here I thought were just average, I don't think there was I story I didn't like, which is a rare for an anthology. I wouldn't mind if DC made an annual event our this anthology.
BTW, the first chapter of Spaceman by Azzarello and Risso was awesome. And unlike DHP which had a preview of Frank Miller's new series, this was an actual story.
Batman: Gates of Gotham#1 - I really loved this Batman book. The writers did a great job with setting up the story in the first issue. The connection that they revealed between existing characters was interesting. Since one of the writers is Scott Snyder, I am assuming that whatever happens at the end of this mini-series will eventually feed into Detective Comics.

I actually dropped this series after reading #1, I thought it was an average Batman story.....another example of Diff'rent Strokes.HassanT wrote: Batman: Gates of Gotham#1 - I really loved this Batman book. Out of curiosity, are you a long time fan of the video game series?Chris Campbell wrote:Mega Man #1 - This book was a delight. I'll be picking this up both for myself and to read to my son. The art was of the highest quality, and we got a great set-up issue for 4 issue arc and for the series as a whole. 4 out 5 Mega Blasters!

I played the game as a kid. Just a casual fan. I'm predisposed to like comics that my boys react favorably toDanscomics wrote:Out of curiosity, are you a long time fan of the video game series?Chris Campbell wrote:Mega Man #1 - This book was a delight. Blue Estate #2 (Image) - I am breaking the rules so I am getting that out of the way at the start. For some reason I ordered issue #2 because I thought I had ordered issue 1. As it turns out I did not order issue 1 or #3. The cover really struck me so it must have caught my eye when ordering.
With all that being said I thought this issue was OK. I got dropped in the middle of the story, but it was not too bad in terms of getting up to speed. I thought the art was good in that it fit the mood of the story. The story still seemed to be in the setup phase. The ending was kind of abrupt. Overall I liked what I read so if I remember to I would probably pick up the trade.

Vampirella & the Scarlet Legion #1 (Dynamite) - Nothing intrinsically wrong with this book, it just didn't "grab" me. It's set in time prior to the current series, so at least Vampi is in her classic costume, but this is not something I'm coming back for more of.
Charlaine Harris' Grave Sight #1 (Dynamite) - At $7.99 for 44 pages of story this is priced double a $3.99 comic for double the content, but it seemed really light reading for $7.99, maybe I'd have stuck around at $5.99......
Minx #1 (Ardden) - Very interesting&different story, I can't go into the parts I liked without spoiling it, but it's about a native American woman and the juxtaposition of the waking world & dreamtime. There were a couple of clumsy scene transitions, but overall, I can forgive those for a new creator. I found enough that was new & interesting here to keep going with this one.
DEAN KOONTZ NEVERMORE #1 (Dynamite) - It's been so long since I read the aborted Dabel Brothers version of this that it was like reading it again for the 1st time. I still like the series, Sliders-like alternate earths stuff.
HACK SLASH EVA MONSTERS BALL #1 (Dynamite) - I really like Hack/Slash, but I have no familiarity with the Eva character & this story was kind of pedestrian. I'll stick to the main Hack/Slash series.
GREEN HORNET AFTERMATH #1 (Dynamite) - This is a follow on to the movie I didn't see with art that I really didn't care for at all. Pretty easy for me to pass on this one.
Netherworld #1 (Image/Top Cow) - I liked this one, started out as a mystery & ended with a definite supernatural twist, last page got me wanting to come back for more.

I'm bummed it wasn't to your liking. I'm such a H/S fanboy that I'll buy anything and everything with those characters. Did you read the Valentine's Day special with Bomb Queen? I really liked that appearance.BobBretall wrote:HACK SLASH EVA MONSTERS BALL #1 (Dynamite) - I really like Hack/Slash, but I have no familiarity with the Eva character & this story was kind of pedestrian. Yes, but I like Bomb Queen, plus I think Jimmie Robinson did a way better job on that than was done on the Eva crossover.Chris Campbell wrote:I'm bummed it wasn't to your liking. Fear Itself: The Deep #1 - I was a big Defenders fan in the old days and thought this issue was ok. There was a young female character in the book with Namor that I didn't think they did a good job introducing. It wasn't a bad book and probably the better of most Fear Itself tie-ins, but I am not going to get the other issues.
Flashpoint:Batman Knight of Vengeance #1
Flashpoint: Abin Sur: Green Lantern #1
Flashpoint: Secret Seven #1
Flashpoint: World of Flashpoint #1
I found all of these books very enjoyable. If I had to rank them in order, I would put Batman first, then Secret Seven and the other two tie for third. But they were all well done books. The Batman book was no surprised because of the creative team involved. The Secret Seven book was my hope for a great weird DC book and it delivered. It looks like Milligan linked this book to his original Shade book, which is a plus. Abin Sur story was interesting take on what would have happened if Hal was never Green Lantern. In World of Flashpoint, we find out more about the world of flashpoint (hence the name). We also find out who are the members of HIVE in this world.

50 Girls 50
This was an interesting story about a group of female space explores on a return mission back to earth after traveling to far away planets in search of new resources for Earth to use, but someone goes very wrong and they end up lost in Space. I see this becoming an all Female Lost in Space / Star Trek style story.
The basic concept was interesting, but the execution and final product felt weak and flat. There was very little character development or even character building done. I couldn't tell who from who, and I don't mean the art, but names or personalities of the girls. That should be done in a #1 issue, and not in the comic's back matter.
Fun book, but I think I'll pass until the Hardcover is released.
